However, the fickle sort that we are, tastes now appear to be gravitating towards compact crossover SUVs or CUVs as we call them.

The exodus away from cars was never more evident than in the month of July 2015 when compact car sales were down 10.2 per cent. At the same time, small SUV sales were up 5.2 per cent for the month and 7.6 per cent for the year.

It was enough to prompt one prominent Canadian auto executive to tell me that car sales have just Ą°fallen off a cliff.Ąą

One of the beneficiaries of the switch in allegiances may be the Mazda CX-5, a vehicle that has undergone a mild refresh for the 2016 model year.

It has seen sales take off, up 15.8 per cent for the month and 11.8 for the year.

And this at the same time as Mazda has introduced the smaller, but very similar CX-3 subcompact crossover for 2016, which sold 1,100 units of its own in July, compared with 2,166 of the CX-5.

It is not the most powerful and not the lightest vehicle in its class (although close to it), but it just does everything well.

In a unique marketing move, Toyota Canada is letting Canadians take a sneak peek at the 2016 Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup months before it arrives in showrooms this fall.

Tacoma Tour 2016 will bring the truck to events throughout the summer in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia from now until August.

Leading the tour will be noted Canadian automotive journalists and truck experts, Howard Elmer from Ontario and Eric Descarries from Quebec.

The first events were held June 19 at Niagara-on-the-Lake and June 20 in Vaughan.

There will be four trim levels, including the new topline TRD Sport. There will be a regular and crew cab version with all versions offered in 4X2 or 4X4 configuration.

It is powered by a Ą°segment firstĄą 3.5-litre Atkinson Cycle V6 with 270 hp. The other engine is the base 2.7-litre inline four-cylinder currently available on the Tacoma.

Tacoma will also come with a six-speed manual or new six-speed automatic.

Fuel consumption and towing numbers are currently being calculated.

Visually, styling reflects a more angular face with a taller hood and bigger fender flares and standout grille treatment.

Available from Toyota for the first time will be a tri-fold hard tonneau cover for the truck bed.

For the third year in a row, U.S. customers have rated Porsche highest among all automotive nameplates in the 2015 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

In addition to the brand taking overall honors, the Porsche 911 ranked highest for the fourth consecutive year in its vehicle segment (Midsize Premium Sporty Car), while Boxster and Cayman swept the first two places in the Compact Premium Sporty Car segment.

In its first year of production, the Porsche Macan was awarded the highest rank in the Compact Premium SUV segment.

The Cayenne and Panamera models achieved third place in their vehicle segments of Midsize Premium SUV and Large Premium Car.

As a result, this is the first time that five Porsche model series have reached the top 3 rankings in their respective segments.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study measures the number of problems experienced by U.S. customers during the first 90 days of ownership.

Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles with a lower score meaning higher quality.

Porsche scored only 80 points on the problems per 100 scale, compared to the premium industry average of 110. The overall industry average was 112.
