ThereĄŻs Good Room Inside For Five

In a time-honoured rite of passage, our American neighbours move into college dorms each fall to immerse themselves in campus life, while many Canadian students forego the experience and live at home, grudgingly joining the daily grind as commuters.

Plenty of students have to travel daily to a suburban college or university campus that isnĄŻt always easily reached by transit. Buying a used car to make the commute bearable makes some sense if the distance is manageable.

For the equivalent to one year of rent, a smart student could be driving to campus and learning some essential life lessons ¨C like circling around traffic jams and sourcing cheap gas. Here are eight recommended used cars you can buy today for around $8,000.

Any one of these will make a decent alternative to a backpack.

The wee Vibe may outlive all the other orphaned Pontiacs still in circulation, mostly because itĄŻs powered by the same fuel-efficient, 132-hp 1.8-L four cylinder that makes the Toyota Matrix and Corolla such dependable buys. Vibes use an outdated, but durable, four-speed automatic transmission or five-speed stick with this engine.

The Vibe was sold only as a mini wagon by its dearly departed dealer network. ThereĄŻs good room inside for five, thanks to the flat floor and upright seating. The cargo hold behind the folding rear bench isnĄŻt particularly big, but itĄŻs finished in hard plastic to accommodate wet and messy cargo ¨C like the collegeĄŻs pet mascot.

Stick with the 1.8-L engine and pass on the larger 2.4-L four; it has a reputation for burning oil. Other problems include worn-out sensors that trip the Check Engine light, scratch-prone paint and some interior rattles. ThereĄŻs an all-wheel-drive model, but youĄŻre better off with a set of four snow tires. GM still services the Vibe, and Toyota dealers are happy to help, too.

Comprehensive Vehicle Reports Provide Transparency

The Mitsubishi Lancer is not a household name ¨C and thatĄŻs the genius of it. It languishes on dealer lots so buyers can negotiate a lower price. The Lancer comes as a four-door sedan, but thereĄŻs also a rare but practical Sportback model with a yawning hatchback thatĄŻs great for helping your friends move back home.

ItĄŻs adequately motivated by a 152-hp 2.0-L four-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or optional continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission. The car handles better than most economy cars; credit the LancerĄŻs alter-ego, the high-performance Evo. Most Lancers come with a big spoiler sprouting from the trunk lid ¨C weĄŻd pay a premium for one without it.

The made-in-Japan Lancer doesnĄŻt break much. Gripes are limited to easily chipped paint, short-lived clutches, a few failed CVT transmissions and unwelcome rattles. Some drivers dislike the CVTĄŻs sluggish behaviour, which can stifle a lot of forward thrust from the four banger, especially when the air conditioner is running.

We canĄŻt think of a better student (or hamster) driving appliance than the quirky but endearing Kia Soul. Built on the modified front-drive platform of the Rio subcompact, the Soul conceals its econobox roots but delivers a lot of the cheap-to-own benefits. Owners rave about its cheerful cabin, eye-searing paint colours, refined demeanor and student-friendly tech options.

The Soul yields a surprising amount of interior space for occupants and cargo, thanks to its tall-box profile. There are two available engines: a base 1.6-L four-cylinder making 122 hp and a 2.0-L four putting out 142 horses ¨C the latter of which works better with the six-speed automatic transmission.

Liabilities include big blind spots to the rear, road noise, susceptibility to crosswinds and scratch-prone plastic in the cabin. Reliability has been above reproach. Reported boo-boos include easily chipped paint and windshields, faulty brake-light switches and some rattles. Some worn steering linkages have been reported; thereĄŻs a recall for selected model years.

Redesigned for 2010, the Mazda3 is an overachieving driverĄŻs car that elevates it well above the economy-car class average. ItĄŻs almost too good to hand over to a student. Still, the back seat is a little cramped for friends, the trunk is a tad small and some people may find the ride stiff ¨C the downside of driving a sweet-handling car.

Available in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback configurations, the 3 is powered by a 148-hp 2.0-L DOHC four cylinder carried over from the previous 3, paired with either a five-speed stick or five-speed automatic transmission. ThereĄŻs a bigger 2.5-L four, too, but itĄŻs very fond of gasoline.

Reliability-wise the Mazda3 has a manual-transmission clutch that wears unusually quickly (not an issue when most students will opt for the automatic), the tire valve stems may fail and thereĄŻs reports of collapsed driverĄŻs seats due to broken seat height adjustment lifter links. Fortunately, Mazda is repairing them through a recall campaign.

Buying a car? Take Time to Research Financing Options

Living in CanadaĄŻs snowbelt provides an understandable predilection for all-wheel drive. But it doesnĄŻt have to be an SUV. With its standard symmetrical AWD system always churning, the Subaru Impreza is immensely stable at speed and in all conditions. Buyers can choose between four-door sedan and hatchback configurations.

SubaruĄŻs 2.5-L SOHC flat-four engine puts out 170 hp, working through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine is a Ą°boxerĄą design, meaning that the cylinders are horizontally opposed, two to a side, laying flat and low to reduce the carĄŻs centre of gravity. Fuel use is a little thirsty, but itĄŻs a big four cylinder and thereĄŻs a toll for four-wheel traction.

Mechanical issues reveal a few leaky head gaskets, weak clutches and easily chipped paint. You may be challenged finding a good example for $8,000 since Canucks covet their Subies and depreciation is slow. The good news is when you sell it later, youĄŻre bound to get lots of your money back.

HereĄŻs a business case study: how did a motorcycle company figure out what makes a great small car? The Honda CivicĄŻs sleek styling and upscale cabin contradict its economy-car mission, while refined drivetrains work seamlessly to deliver good power and fuel economy. WhatĄŻs nice is thereĄŻs a two-door coupe available, in addition to the popular four-door sedan.

Inside is a two-tiered instrument panel with an analog tachometer, while a digital speedometer lives near the windshield to help keep the driverĄŻs eyes focused on distance. The chain-driven 1.8-L SOHC four cylinder is good for 140 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, working through either a manual or automatic transmission, both with five gears.

Prior to 2009, porous aluminum engine blocks and uneven rear tire wear caused by faulty upper control arms marred what was supposed to be a flawless reputation. The 2009-11 Civic corrected those problems, though some owners had to contend with premature brake wear, broken engine mounts, short-lived a/c condensers and clearcoat delamination. Hey, nobodyĄŻs perfect.

The subcompact Hyundai Accent impresses with its surprisingly opulent furnishings and features on a mac-and-cheese budget. Available as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, the cabin is rendered in good materials and pleasing shapes. There are nice things inside this small package.

Outside, the fourth-generation Accent saw the previous carĄŻs forgettable styling replaced with crisp European lines stretched over an 8-cm longer wheelbase that yields more legroom inside. The AccentĄŻs lone engine is a direct-injected 1.6-L four-cylinder good for 138 hp, working through either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.

Ride and handling characteristics are appreciably better than the subcompact class average. In U.S. government testing, the Accent earned four out of five stars for overall crash protection, frontal impact and side intrusion. There are few reliability complaints beyond a common gripe that the manual gearboxĄŻs clutch may wear out rapidly. The carĄŻs Korean tires are known for developing sidewall bulges and checking out early.

Suzuki may have left Canada for greener pastures, but it also left us with a bunch of orphaned SX4 sedans and five-door hatchbacks that have held up well. Most are front-drive models, although there are some all-wheel-drive SX4s with an electric solenoid-operated clutch pack that activates the rear wheels when required. It can also be locked in 4ĄÁ4 mode, an unusual feature in a crossover.

The SX4 offers a generous greenhouse and tall seating, giving occupants the illusion ¨C and the esteem ¨C of riding in a five-eighths-scale minivan. Power is supplied by a 2.0-L four cylinder making 143 hp, tied to a five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission, the latter replaced by a CVT in 2010.

The made-in-Japan SX4 has drawn little criticism in terms of its dependability. The air conditioner may stop working because the electromagnet compressor clutch failed. Faulty airbag warning lamps and seat sensors have been the subject of a recall. Suzuki reportedly still supports authorized service centres, though buying a moribund brand entitles you to a hefty discount.

Ford fans can now download digital images for Ford vehicles at the first-ever, automaker-authorized one-stop online store for 3D-printable vehicle files.

The Ford 3D Store, allows customers to use advanced technology to make their own models of Ford vehicles of the size and material they desire, or simply opt to purchase a 3D digital file from a growing library of more than 1,000 Ford images.

Available 3D-printed Ford models include the new Ford GT, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350R, Focus ST and Fiesta ST. Printed models and digital files for additional Ford vehicles will be available at a later date.

3D-printed models available to order are 1/32nd scale in plastic, but purchasing a digital image allows users to have a Ford model 3D-printed to the scale and of the material they choose, either from their own printer or from an outside source.

Professional 3D printers can create a model in materials ranging from soft plastics to sandstone and even various metals.

When a buyer purchases a model or digital image, he or she must register with the site and agree that the item will not be used commercially.

Porsche Commemorates Vic Elfords 80th Birthday

Born in London on June 10, 1935, Vic Elford was one of the fastest drivers in the highly competitive Sixties and Seventies racing scene.

ElfordĄŻs lap records include Targa Florio, Nurburgring, Daytona, Sebring, Norisring, Monza, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Riverside, and Le Mans ¨C where he was the first driver to lap at over a 150 mph average in the Porsche long-tail 917 in 1970.

Known as Ą°Quick VicĄą to friends and competitors, Elford is one of the few drivers to excel in sports cars, rally cars, and Formula 1 at a championship level.

Elford was one of the most versatile drivers of his or any era. Elford raced in Sports Cars, Rally Cars, Formula 1, CanAm, and the Daytona 500 of NASCAR.

During the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, when a Ferrari crashed in front of him, Vic stopped mid-race to try to extricate the driver from his burning car.

Television cameras caught the action and Vic was named Ą°Knight of the National Order of MeritĄą or Chevalier de lĄŻOrdre National du M¨Śrite by French President Georges Pompidou for his act of courage and heroism.

Vic has been a featured guest at all four previous Porsche Rennsport Reunions, and will attend the upcoming Rennsport Reunion V this September 25-27, 2015 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Elford was elected to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001 and currently lives in South Florida, with his wife Anita.

Summer is winding down and soon it will be time to pull those boats out of the water, which means many motorists will be driving home with trailer in tow. We consulted with Director of Muskoka Wharf Marine in Gravenhurst Greg De Marco who offers rental and timesharing packages for everything from lighter kayaks and Waverunners to heavier and more substantial wakeboard and pontoon boats. Regardless of whether youĄŻre an amateur or an expert, weĄŻve outlined some guidelines to help ensure your trip goes off without a hitch.

10) Pick the Right Tool for the Job

An inevitability during the summer months seems to be witnessing a vehicle that has no business towing a trailer, chugging along with its rear end sagging and safety chains scraping the road. Despite the size and stature of your vehicle, it is best to reference your ownerĄŻs manual for the vehicleĄŻs maximum towing capacity and gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This refers to the total amount of weight allowed for your entire setup, including vehicle, occupants, and cargo, in addition to the load on the trailer and the trailer itself. 9) Trailer Inspection

It never fails. Every summer you will inevitably pass numerous boat trailers and campers left stranded on the side of the road after suffering from seized wheel bearings or a flat tire. Recreational trailers are often treated poorly and left sitting idle to corrode for months on end, so ensuring that your load is road worthy is crucial before setting off. It may save your family vacation, and possibly your marriage.

8) Getting Hitched

Many tow vehicles will be equipped with factory-mounted hitches, but there are several options and variables based on your vehicle, trailer and load in general. A weight-carrying hitch is recommended for if the combined weight of the trailer and its cargo is up to 1,500 kgs. Weight-distributing hitches are recommended for heavier loads which will apply significant pressure onto the tongue and hitch ball which would throw off the balance of your towing setup and make handling difficult.

7) Let there be Lights

In addition to inspecting the overall road-worthiness of the trailer you will be towing, ensure that the brake lights and turn signals are working properly. HereĄŻs a helpful tip to help you save time; rather than walking back and forth from the vehicle to the back of the trailer to inspect turn signals, turn on the hazard lights to cover both sides on one trip.

6) Practice Makes Perfect

Towing a trailer, particularly backing up, are not necessarily intuitive tasks and take some time to become second nature. Before youĄŻre forced into a challenging situation with obstacles and an audience, why not visit an empty parking lot to practice the basics? Learn the characteristics of your setup and become accustomed to your turning radius. You can likely avoid many situations where backing up would be required, but it is still an essential skill if you plan on towing a trailer of any kind.

5) Secure your Load

It is always better to err on the side of caution when fastening your cargo into place to ensure that it doesnĄŻt throw off the balance of your vehicle, or heaven forbid, become a projectile. It would be very unfortunate to damage your costly investment for the nominal price of a ratchet strap. It is also important to check and then re-check once you have moved to ensure that the load has not shifted. Safety chains should be fastened in an ĄŽXĄŻ fashion in a manner that allows sufficient turning radius but arenĄŻt dragging on the ground.

4) Mirror, Mirror

In most cases your rearview mirror will be obstructed by your trailer deeming it useless. You will also have a much longer wheelbase which will create significant blind spots that will need to be checked when backing up, merging or negotiating lane changes. Adjust your mirrors outward accordingly and explore the possibility of acquiring additional mirrors to increase your visibility.?

One of the most infuriating experiences of my life occurred when three different people were all attempting to throw their two cents in as to how I should navigate a large moving van down a narrow driveway in between two houses without hitting parked vehicles or pedestrians on a crowded street. Avoid confusion and potential jail time by appointing a spotter and have them stand in a location where they can be both seen and heard. Clear communication and proper directions will make backing up an infinitely easier task.

2) Weight Distribution

Keep in mind that it is always best to have heavier items down low so that they donĄŻt fall or throw off the balance of the trailer. Pack heavier items first and fasten them into place if possible to ensure they donĄŻt move around. Weight should be kept low and towards the front of the trailer as much as possible.

ItĄŻs not a race. Towing a trailer involves carrying extra bulk and weight which means you should allow more time to accelerate, merge, brake and negotiate turns or park. Nothing good will come out of being in a rush so leave yourself extra time and space. Avoiding heavy braking or manoeuvres will save your brakes, tires and safety of your load.

Headroom Is Abundant In Back

Topping out just under $20K, Hyundai Accent is no longer a cheapie subcompact. Nor does it look the part.

Sure, you can score one for as little as $13,249 ($350 more for the hatchback). But thatĄŻs the base car with six-speed manual ¨C and none of the comforts we now expect in our rides. No air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows, Bluetooth, telescopic steering or anything that elevates the daily commute above abject misery.

So an Accent you can really live with will cost another couple of grand, be it for the sedan or five-door hatchback as tested.

The LE five-door ($15,999) and the SE ($18,499) are two new models in the Accent lineup.

Hyundai is a master of packaging and has reduced the steep price walk from its barebones entry car to the next model up by introducing the LE, which for another $2,400 adds a six-speed automatic (with Shiftronic), air conditioning and remote start.

Two more steps up is the sportier SE ¨C my ride for the week. It was dipped in a head-turning shade of Sunflower Yellow and rolled on a set of 16-inch alloys instead of crappy 14-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers.

Compared to the Ą°jellybeanĄą styling of the last-generation Accent, this oneĄŻs quite handsome with an aggressive profile that features sculpted sheetmetal, and a sharp character line that follows its rising beltline.

In front, the black hexagonal grille is flanked by swept-back headlamps, and in back, the AccentĄŻs rear-sloping roofline ends in a sporty roof spoiler. The carĄŻs wedge shape not only looks cool but is good for aerodynamics. Coefficient of drag is a slippery 0.30.

But itĄŻs not so good for rear visibility.

Inside, thereĄŻs no shortage of hard plastic, but itĄŻs nicely textured and doesnĄŻt look cheap. The centre stack is simply laid out, with large dials for HVAC and basic buttons and knobs for the six-speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system.

Steering is tilt/telescopic, and includes controls for audio, cruise and Bluetooth phone, and front seats get two-position heating. A power sunroof provides much-needed light to the mostly charcoal interior.

Headroom is abundant in back, and leg room is adequate for most, able to accommodate two adults ¨C three in a pinch. The 60/40 seats drop to expand the generous 600-litre cargo hold to 1,345 litres. That was enough room last winter to swallow an entire trade show display, which I assumed would take two trips ¨C or an SUV.

Power comes from an all-aluminum 1.6-litre four cylinder with gasoline direct injection (GDI), and dual continuously variable valve timing. It makes 138 hp and 123 lb/ft of torque, besting several major competitors. But with tall gearing, itĄŻs more about fuel economy than snappy performance.

At highway speeds, it turns over just north of 2,000 rpm, making this subcompact far less buzzy than some IĄŻve driven. And although the Accent is no hot hatch, itĄŻs on par with much of the competition.

ActiveEco will help achieve the posted fuel economy of 8.9/6.3/7.7 L/100 km, but as it blunts the throttle and remaps the transmission for earlier shifting, any liveliness from the little four-pot engine is gone. I kept ActiveEco off most of the week and still achieved just over eight litres per 100 km combined.

Vehicles like this Accent hatchback, and the slightly more commodious Elantra GT I drove a week earlier, nicely fill the needs of todayĄŻs smaller families.

With ample room for four passengers, a Ą°trunkĄą larger than most full-size sedans, and thrifty fuel economy, itĄŻs no wonder so many buyers choose five doors over four.
