Perhaps My Bias Is Showing Here

WhatĄŻs best: The styling, handling and ride are all among the best in the compact crossover class.WhatĄŻs worst: Not a lot to complain about here, but although the interior is much improved, it may not match up with all the competition.WhatĄŻs interesting: The navigation system is a $425 option on GX and GS, standard on the GT. A far cry from the $1,800+ navigation units we used to see a few years back.

How quickly things change in the automotive world.

For years, Canadians have had a love affair with the compact car.

However, the fickle sort that we are, tastes now appear to be gravitating towards compact crossover SUVs or CUVs as we call them.

The exodus away from cars was never more evident than in the month of July 2015 when compact car sales were down 10.2 per cent. At the same time, small SUV sales were up 5.2 per cent for the month and 7.6 per cent for the year.

It was enough to prompt one prominent Canadian auto executive to tell me that car sales have just Ą°fallen off a cliff.Ąą

One of the beneficiaries of the switch in allegiances may be the Mazda CX-5, a vehicle that has undergone a mild refresh for the 2016 model year.

It has seen sales take off, up 15.8 per cent for the month and 11.8 for the year.

And this at the same time as Mazda has introduced the smaller, but very similar CX-3 subcompact crossover for 2016, which sold 1,100 units of its own in July, compared with 2,166 of the CX-5.

This marks the fourth model year for the CX-5 that replaced the Tribute in the Mazda lineup. It has been a success from the get-go and sits in the top 10 in the sales charts of compact SUVs.

But with such strong competition as the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Jeep Cherokee, the 2016 model has to be better to keep up.

To me, the new model is better than ever and I have had a little more drive time in one than most. We have our own 2013 CX-5 GS sitting in the driveway as I write this.

It has been to Florida and back along with a few other memorable road trips without a hiccup.

At the heart of the CX-5 is MazdaĄŻs Skyactiv technology, which has emphasized weight reduction along with new engines and powertrains as a means of improving fuel efficiency and performance.

RELATED:?He said/She said: 2016 Mazda CX-3 CUV Review

This has been the Mazda philosophy on how to improve fuel efficiency and who can argue against it.

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is available with two Skyactiv engines. At the base GX level, the CX-5 has a direct injection 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder producing 165 hp and 150 lb/ft of torque. Standard is a six-speed manual with a six-speed automatic optional.

The GS and top-shelf GT models get a 2.5-litre direct injection DOHC inline four-cylinder engine, making 184 hp and 185 lb/ft of torque.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the GX and GS models with all-wheel drive optional. AWD is standard on the GT, which we tested. New this year is a Drive Selection feature, allowing drivers to switch drive modes for more responsive driving.

For 2016, Mazda has updated the face of the CX-5 with a new grille and fog light design. Inside, particular attention has been paid to improving the quality feel of the materials and it is quite evident when you compare the new model with our earlier version.

Upgrades were also made to the front and rear seats and the suspension system, resulting greater ride comfort.

I was particularly impressed with the sound reduction in the cabin. It is quite noticeable, the result of the use of more sound insulation. Mazda says the cabin is now 10 per cent quieter than the previous model.

Steering and road handling have always been strong points of Mazda vehicles in general and the CX-5 is no exception. Perhaps my bias is showing here, but in my opinion this is one of the best handling crossovers on the market. It corners well with responsive steering and decent acceleration with the 2.5-litre engine.

RELATED:?2016 Mazda 6 Grand Touring Review

It is not the most powerful and not the lightest vehicle in its class (although close to it), but it just does everything well.

If I had one complaint about our 2013 model it would be the lack of power. The 155 hp 2.0-litre engine struggles when you have a full passenger or cargo load.

This same engine (now with 165 hp) is in the GX and for that reason, I would opt for the GS or GT trims with the 184 hp 2.5-litre engine. To my mind, this is just the right amount of power for this vehicle that weights in between 1,458 kg (3,214 lb) and 1,629 kg (3,591 lb) depending upon the trim level.

The six-speed automatic transmission works very well with the 2.5-litre engine in the GT model. Shifts are smooth and the gearing just right to get the most out of the engine.

Fuel numbers for the 2.5-litre in the GS automatic FWD are 8.9/7.1L/100 km city/highway, while the AWD in the GS and GT (as tested) is 9.8/7.7L/100 km.

Cargo volume is 966 litres behind the second row 40/20/40 split rear seats and 1,852 litres with the seats folded. Tow rating is 907 kg (2,000 lb).

Mazda likes to brag that it puts the soul of a sports car in every vehicle it produces and the CX-5 is no exception. Already at or near the top of the compact crossover SUV class, the CX-5 is even better for 2016.

BODY STYLE: Compact crossover SUV.
DRIVE METHOD: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive, six-speed automatic transmission.
ENGINE: 2.5-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder (184 hp, 185 lb/ft)
FUEL ECONOMY: 9.8/7.9/L/100 km (city/hwy)
TOW RATING: 907 kg (2,000 lb)
CARGO VOLUME: behind 40/20/40 split second row seat 966 litres (34.1 cu ft); second row folded, 1,852 litres (65.4 cu ft)
PRICE: $34,895; as tested $39,190 including $1,895 shipping fee

ThereĄŻs Good Room Inside For Five

In a time-honoured rite of passage, our American neighbours move into college dorms each fall to immerse themselves in campus life, while many Canadian students forego the experience and live at home, grudgingly joining the daily grind as commuters.

Plenty of students have to travel daily to a suburban college or university campus that isnĄŻt always easily reached by transit. Buying a used car to make the commute bearable makes some sense if the distance is manageable.

For the equivalent to one year of rent, a smart student could be driving to campus and learning some essential life lessons ¨C like circling around traffic jams and sourcing cheap gas. Here are eight recommended used cars you can buy today for around $8,000.

Any one of these will make a decent alternative to a backpack.

Campus Cars

The wee Vibe may outlive all the other orphaned Pontiacs still in circulation, mostly because itĄŻs powered by the same fuel-efficient, 132-hp 1.8-L four cylinder that makes the Toyota Matrix and Corolla such dependable buys. Vibes use an outdated, but durable, four-speed automatic transmission or five-speed stick with this engine.

The Vibe was sold only as a mini wagon by its dearly departed dealer network. ThereĄŻs good room inside for five, thanks to the flat floor and upright seating. The cargo hold behind the folding rear bench isnĄŻt particularly big, but itĄŻs finished in hard plastic to accommodate wet and messy cargo ¨C like the collegeĄŻs pet mascot.

Stick with the 1.8-L engine and pass on the larger 2.4-L four; it has a reputation for burning oil. Other problems include worn-out sensors that trip the Check Engine light, scratch-prone paint and some interior rattles. ThereĄŻs an all-wheel-drive model, but youĄŻre better off with a set of four snow tires. GM still services the Vibe, and Toyota dealers are happy to help, too.

Comprehensive Vehicle Reports Provide Transparency

The Mitsubishi Lancer is not a household name ¨C and thatĄŻs the genius of it. It languishes on dealer lots so buyers can negotiate a lower price. The Lancer comes as a four-door sedan, but thereĄŻs also a rare but practical Sportback model with a yawning hatchback thatĄŻs great for helping your friends move back home.

ItĄŻs adequately motivated by a 152-hp 2.0-L four-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or optional continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission. The car handles better than most economy cars; credit the LancerĄŻs alter-ego, the high-performance Evo. Most Lancers come with a big spoiler sprouting from the trunk lid ¨C weĄŻd pay a premium for one without it.

The made-in-Japan Lancer doesnĄŻt break much. Gripes are limited to easily chipped paint, short-lived clutches, a few failed CVT transmissions and unwelcome rattles. Some drivers dislike the CVTĄŻs sluggish behaviour, which can stifle a lot of forward thrust from the four banger, especially when the air conditioner is running.

Campus Cars

We canĄŻt think of a better student (or hamster) driving appliance than the quirky but endearing Kia Soul. Built on the modified front-drive platform of the Rio subcompact, the Soul conceals its econobox roots but delivers a lot of the cheap-to-own benefits. Owners rave about its cheerful cabin, eye-searing paint colours, refined demeanor and student-friendly tech options.

The Soul yields a surprising amount of interior space for occupants and cargo, thanks to its tall-box profile. There are two available engines: a base 1.6-L four-cylinder making 122 hp and a 2.0-L four putting out 142 horses ¨C the latter of which works better with the six-speed automatic transmission.

Liabilities include big blind spots to the rear, road noise, susceptibility to crosswinds and scratch-prone plastic in the cabin. Reliability has been above reproach. Reported boo-boos include easily chipped paint and windshields, faulty brake-light switches and some rattles. Some worn steering linkages have been reported; thereĄŻs a recall for selected model years.

Campus Cars

Redesigned for 2010, the Mazda3 is an overachieving driverĄŻs car that elevates it well above the economy-car class average. ItĄŻs almost too good to hand over to a student. Still, the back seat is a little cramped for friends, the trunk is a tad small and some people may find the ride stiff ¨C the downside of driving a sweet-handling car.

Available in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback configurations, the 3 is powered by a 148-hp 2.0-L DOHC four cylinder carried over from the previous 3, paired with either a five-speed stick or five-speed automatic transmission. ThereĄŻs a bigger 2.5-L four, too, but itĄŻs very fond of gasoline.

Reliability-wise the Mazda3 has a manual-transmission clutch that wears unusually quickly (not an issue when most students will opt for the automatic), the tire valve stems may fail and thereĄŻs reports of collapsed driverĄŻs seats due to broken seat height adjustment lifter links. Fortunately, Mazda is repairing them through a recall campaign.

Buying a car? Take Time to Research Financing Options

Campus Cars

Living in CanadaĄŻs snowbelt provides an understandable predilection for all-wheel drive. But it doesnĄŻt have to be an SUV. With its standard symmetrical AWD system always churning, the Subaru Impreza is immensely stable at speed and in all conditions. Buyers can choose between four-door sedan and hatchback configurations.

SubaruĄŻs 2.5-L SOHC flat-four engine puts out 170 hp, working through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine is a Ą°boxerĄą design, meaning that the cylinders are horizontally opposed, two to a side, laying flat and low to reduce the carĄŻs centre of gravity. Fuel use is a little thirsty, but itĄŻs a big four cylinder and thereĄŻs a toll for four-wheel traction.

Mechanical issues reveal a few leaky head gaskets, weak clutches and easily chipped paint. You may be challenged finding a good example for $8,000 since Canucks covet their Subies and depreciation is slow. The good news is when you sell it later, youĄŻre bound to get lots of your money back.

Campus Cars

HereĄŻs a business case study: how did a motorcycle company figure out what makes a great small car? The Honda CivicĄŻs sleek styling and upscale cabin contradict its economy-car mission, while refined drivetrains work seamlessly to deliver good power and fuel economy. WhatĄŻs nice is thereĄŻs a two-door coupe available, in addition to the popular four-door sedan.

Inside is a two-tiered instrument panel with an analog tachometer, while a digital speedometer lives near the windshield to help keep the driverĄŻs eyes focused on distance. The chain-driven 1.8-L SOHC four cylinder is good for 140 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, working through either a manual or automatic transmission, both with five gears.

Prior to 2009, porous aluminum engine blocks and uneven rear tire wear caused by faulty upper control arms marred what was supposed to be a flawless reputation. The 2009-11 Civic corrected those problems, though some owners had to contend with premature brake wear, broken engine mounts, short-lived a/c condensers and clearcoat delamination. Hey, nobodyĄŻs perfect.

Campus Cars

The subcompact Hyundai Accent impresses with its surprisingly opulent furnishings and features on a mac-and-cheese budget. Available as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, the cabin is rendered in good materials and pleasing shapes. There are nice things inside this small package.

Outside, the fourth-generation Accent saw the previous carĄŻs forgettable styling replaced with crisp European lines stretched over an 8-cm longer wheelbase that yields more legroom inside. The AccentĄŻs lone engine is a direct-injected 1.6-L four-cylinder good for 138 hp, working through either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.

Ride and handling characteristics are appreciably better than the subcompact class average. In U.S. government testing, the Accent earned four out of five stars for overall crash protection, frontal impact and side intrusion. There are few reliability complaints beyond a common gripe that the manual gearboxĄŻs clutch may wear out rapidly. The carĄŻs Korean tires are known for developing sidewall bulges and checking out early.

Campus Cars

Suzuki may have left Canada for greener pastures, but it also left us with a bunch of orphaned SX4 sedans and five-door hatchbacks that have held up well. Most are front-drive models, although there are some all-wheel-drive SX4s with an electric solenoid-operated clutch pack that activates the rear wheels when required. It can also be locked in 4ĄÁ4 mode, an unusual feature in a crossover.

The SX4 offers a generous greenhouse and tall seating, giving occupants the illusion ¨C and the esteem ¨C of riding in a five-eighths-scale minivan. Power is supplied by a 2.0-L four cylinder making 143 hp, tied to a five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission, the latter replaced by a CVT in 2010.

The made-in-Japan SX4 has drawn little criticism in terms of its dependability. The air conditioner may stop working because the electromagnet compressor clutch failed. Faulty airbag warning lamps and seat sensors have been the subject of a recall. Suzuki reportedly still supports authorized service centres, though buying a moribund brand entitles you to a hefty discount.

Lexus Hoverboard Ride Revealed Video

Following the unveiling of the Lexus Hoverboard in June, the luxury automotive company is completing a full and final reveal of the project concluding a successful testing phase which took place in Cubelles, Barcelona.

The Lexus Hoverboard project began 18 months ago through collaboration with a team of scientists from IFW Dresden and evico GmbH, who specialize in magnetic levitation technology.

Following extensive testing with pro skateboarder and hoverboard test rider Ross McGouran, in Dresden, Germany, the team were determined to push the hoverboard to its limits and conduct further tests within dynamic surroundings.

Since the Lexus Hoverboard was unveiled in June, testing has been carried out in a specially constructed hoverpark, combining elements from skate culture with technology within its architecture.

Up to 200 metres of magnetic track was transported to Barcelona from the Dresden facility to lay beneath the hoverpark surface in order to create the dynamic test, offering Lexus the opportunity to demonstrate tricks no skateboard could ever perform, like travelling across water.

Lexus has captured the final ride footage and released it as a film led by award winning director Henry-Alex Rubin.

RELATED: 2015 Lexus F Sport at ICAR Montreal

The Lexus Hoverboard technology features two Ą°cryostatsĄąĄŞreservoirs in which superconducting material is kept at minus 197 degrees through immersion in liquid nitrogen.

The board is then placed above a track that contains permanent magnets.

The magnetic field from the track is effectively ĄŽfrozenĄŻ into the superconductors in the board, maintaining the distance between the board and the trackĄŞessentially keeping the board hovering.

This force is strong enough to allow the rider to stand and even jump on the board.Ąą
The Lexus Hoverboard film called Ą°SLIDEĄą features the high performance GS F and is part of the fourth project in the Lexus Ą°Amazing in MotionĄą campaign series that showcases creativity and innovation from the Lexus brand.

The Town Of Canmore Is Located One?

Free Firewood and Freezing Rain

Route: Trans Canada Highway 1 WestDriving Distance: 9 hours, 828 kmFavourite Song: Hopeless Wanderer, Mumford & SonsQuote of the Day: Ą°To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.Ąą Freya Stark

After an interesting conversation with European travellers over a morning meal at Wakamow Heights Bed and Breakfast, it was time to hit the road and say farewell to Ą°The Friendly CityĄą of Moose Jaw. I must have been out of my mind when I mapped out this driving day; 800 km to my campsite in Banff National Park didnĄŻt seem like a big deal during the planning phase of this Canada road trip, but as I headed for the hills I was concerned I wouldnĄŻt make it before dark.

Saskatchewan

As flat as the Prairies are, there are some interesting sites along the way. There are salt lakes and rivers throughout Saskatchewan, and when you come upon them it looks like snow covering the ground. I was unable to get a photo, but this is an example of what it looks like thanks to a Toronto to Vancouver bike tour blogger.

For practical purposes, salt resources in Saskatchewan may be considered unlimited. The principle source, and the sole source of present production, is the thick, massive halite of the extensive Prairie Formation in the southern half of the province. The Prairie Formation is also the basis for SaskatchewanĄŻs potash mining industry. Government of Saskatchewan

I arrived in Swift Current in just under two hours, and after seeing the state of my carĄŻs front grille and struggling to see through the hundreds of smeared bug splats on my windshield, I decided it was time for my trusted companion to have a bath. I passed a big casino on my way to the car wash; The Living Sky CasinoĄŻs architecture was part Las Vegas and part First Nations Longhouse. It would have been fun to throw a twenty in a slot machine, but there was no time for play that day so I continued on my way. I sound like Dr. Seuss.

I enjoyed my time getting to know the Prairies but I was anxious to cross the Alberta border for many reasons. One, the mountains were my happy place and I couldnĄŻt wait to be nestled among them for the next two weeks. Two, I was getting closer and closer to meeting ĄŽTĄŻ after a very long decade of not seeing his face. Lastly, I was excited to return to sleeping outside, building a fire and making camp coffee.

Speaking of ĄŽTĄŻ (see Day 4 if you missed the part about a man), I hadnĄŻt heard from him and I was beginning to feel a bit wonky about the whole thing. Meeting someone after not seeing them for almost 10 years was a little out of my comfort zone. No doubt it was outside of his as well, and perhaps was the reason I hadnĄŻt heard from him. I texted him this cheesy picture as I crossed over into his home Province to lighten the mood. I made a deal with myself that if I didnĄŻt hear from him by tomorrow, IĄŻd keep heading west and not look back. If I did hear from him, IĄŻd make the 90 minute backtrack from the campgrounds of Banff to the big city of Calgary for a visit. My favourite Alberta song came on the radio, Ą°Alberta BoundĄą by Paul Brandt, so I turned it up as I merged back onto Trans Canada Highway 1 West, with 5 hours and 500 kilometres to go.

The closer I got to Calgary, the more my stomach flipped.

I could see the faint, rugged peaks of the Rockies far off in the distance and as IĄŻd anticipated, it wasnĄŻt long before the mountains grew larger and more magnificent with every mile. The town of Canmore is located one?hour west of Calgary on a good traffic day. I fell in love with it the first time Ą°TĄą showed it to me a decade ago, and I loved it still. Canmore and Kananaskis Country is host to some of the most beautiful scenery IĄŻd ever seen, knew the area was extremely special to him, and as a matter of trivia, was the backdrop for a few of my favourite movies; Mystery Alaska and Legends of the Fall to name a few. I stopped to stock up on a few groceries, grabbed a coffee at a familiar Tim HortonĄŻs, and I leaned up against my car with a view of the 3 Sisters Mountain while I sipped on my extra large coffee. I took a few deep breaths and felt extremely grateful for where I was standing at that very moment.

I had never camped in Banff National Park before and I was excited for the chance to do so. Banff is a post card mountain town and itĄŻs usually full of global tourists 365 days a year.?? Although I didnĄŻt have time to look around on my way to the campground, I planned to head into town the following morning to walk a small trail beside one of CanadaĄŻs iconic castles, The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

The weather over the past several days had been nothing short of spectacular but as I got closer to Banff, the closer I got to dark, menacing clouds. I had reserved a spot at the Tunnel Mountain 1 Campground so when I pulled up to the booth, registration was problem free and there was plenty of daylight to spare. The female Park Attendant told me to help myself to the pile of free firewood a short drive away, and when I asked about the clouds, she said no rain had fallen. Yet.

My site was awesome and private. I was surrounded by towering pines that filled the air with their sweet scent and I could see the mountains through the trees. I was in heaven and I had hours worth of campfire to enjoy. It was only 6:30pm by the time I set up camp, so I took a small stroll around my campsite and discovered trails that led into the wilderness in every direction. Now where did I put that bear sprayĄ

Dinner was not elaborate that night; it didnĄŻt need to be. I was so happy that soup and herbal tea with a side of chocolate was gourmet enough for me. The splendour that surrounded me was so delicious that I didnĄŻt need a ton of food to fill up what the scenery already had. I could have stayed there for days, but when I heard the loud crack of thunder at dusk I changed my mind. Just let me get through this night without getting soaked to the bone, I thought.

After several hours of poking at the logs on the fire, the cloudy night sky gave way to a full moon and the trees and mountains glowed in the nightĄŻs light. I was thankful for no rain and offered my gratitude by smiling up at the moon. It was approaching midnight by the time I could?feel the cold, and I finally gave in to the tiredness that was invading every crevice of my body. After the last log turned to red and white coals, I grabbed some extra clothes for warmth and zipped myself into the tent for the night. Tomorrow was going to be a big day and I didnĄŻt want to look as if IĄŻd been up half the night. As I drifted off to sleep I heard the gentle sound of rain and I felt peaceful. Good timing.

A little while later I awoke to the sound of a torrential downpour. It was 2am and I flicked my flashlight on to do a quick survey of the tent; so far everything was still dry so I fell back to sleep again. I was so tired I didnĄŻt think anything would prevent me from getting a solid 7 hours.

Somewhere around 4am I was awake again and it was raining harder. I shone my flashlight to assess the situation and this time found water pooling in all four corners. The extra clothes, piled neatly in one of them, were already soaked. I grabbed my phone out from under my pillow and put it in my wool jacket pocket. I was sleeping in a full set of clothes and an alpaca sweater that IĄŻd bought at a market in the high Andes of Ecuador earlier that year. Yes, it was that cold. The good news was the spot IĄŻd picked to lay my sleeping bag; it was on slightly higher ground than the corners and figured I had at least 2 inches of water to go before IĄŻd be soaked on all sides. Whilst patting myself on the back for finding the bright side, several loud cracks of thunder made me jump off my sleeping pad. I was somewhere between crying and laughing when the tentĄŻs fly began to flap furiously in the wind. When I heard the rain turn to ice pellets, I pulled the sleeping bag over my head. I crossed every part of my body as I wished for a warm Chinook wind to replace the ferocious, ice cold monsoon that had descended upon me.

Day break came before 7am and I reached for my phone and began to text everyone I knew for some moral support before I had to face the weather and pack up my camp in the downpour. All I could think of was how tired and road weary I was going to look at my reunion. I retrieved my rubber boots from the trunk, grabbed a juice box and a granola bar from one of the bins in the back seat, and stood under my umbrella eating breakfast in the pouring rain. I watched a man and woman pack up their campsite a little further down the road before I heard him tell her to go sit in the car while he took care of it. Pffft. No sense crying over the fact I had to do it myself. I could be out of there in 20 minutes if I was organized, logical and didnĄŻt cry about it.

I had heard from Ą°TĄą the night before and weĄŻd settled on dinner in Calgary around 6pm. I had an entire day to fill up, so I decided to go into Banff for a morning walk, a better breakfast, and then drive to Lake Louise for and walk around the lake for a few hours. He introduced me to Lake Louise, and I thought it would be poignant to visit it before seeing him again. ?I know. Sap.

As I packed up my tent, I dressed in waterproof couture from head to toe so I could properly play in the rain. I was so excited about a return trip to Lake Louise and my later dinner date that it didnĄŻt matter that the weather wasnĄŻt perfect. It didnĄŻt matter until the rain turned to snow a few hours later, which is when I realized I had no snow brush, no mittens and no sense of humour.

In 1928, The Company Acquired CanadaĄŻs Dodge Bros

FCA Canada (formerly Chrysler Canada) marked its 90th anniversary June 17 at a special celebration on the banks of the Detroit River and steps from its Canadian headquarters.

Employees, senior executives, local media and other special guests attended the celebration.

Fittingly, the event was held at WindsorĄŻs Dieppe Gardens, the former location of the Dominion Typograph Company. There, in 1896, the Dodge brothers established their bicycle company, a precursor to FCAĄŻs modern-day Dodge vehicle brand.

The Chrysler Corporation of Canada Limited was incorporated in Windsor, Ontario, on June 17, 1925, only 11 days after Walter P. Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. Chrysler Corporation of Canada was the successor to the former Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company of Canada.

In 1928, the Company acquired CanadaĄŻs Dodge Bros. operations and truck manufacturer Graham Bros., while the Plymouth and DeSoto divisions were also established, making Chrysler Corp. a full-line Canadian auto manufacturer. A year later, it opened its first new assembly facility, the nucleus for the current Windsor Assembly Plant.

Today, FCA Canada is comprised of seven automotive brands: Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram Truck and Mopar.

It operates two vehicle-manufacturing facilities in Windsor (Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan) and Brampton, Ontario (Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger), plus a key casting plant in Etobicoke in TorontoĄŻs west end. Nationally, the Company has three Regional Business Centres, three Parts Distribution Centres and the unique Automotive Research and Development Centre (ARDC), also in Windsor.

Rearview Camera Is An Option

WhatĄŻs best: The supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with its 354 hp powers the SQ5 to a 0-100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

WhatĄŻs worst: Rearview camera is an option. Hard to believe when itĄŻs standard on many much less expensive vehicles.

WhatĄŻs interesting: The Q5/SQ5 has a choice of powertrains to fit any lifestyle. But for those who value performance, the 354 hp SQ5 is the answer.

The performance variant of AudiĄŻs popular Q5 crossover SUV, the SQ5 has a lot to offer buyers in the entry-luxury market.

The SQ5 is designed especially for those who want a little more pop than the normal Q5, thanks to the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that produces 354 hp and 346 lb/ft of torque.

This marks the first application of the ĄŽSĄŻ designation on one of AudiĄŻs sport utes. Previously the ĄŽSĄŻ has been reserved strictly for AudiĄŻs car lines.

While you canĄŻt be all things to all people, Audi has attempted to do that in the Q5/SQ5 line with several engine options.

The Q5 Komfort comes with a 220 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, while the Progressiv and Technik trim levels also offer a 240 hp 3.0-litre turbo diesel with 428 lb/ft of grunt as well as a 272 hp 3.0-litre TFSI and a 2.0-litre TFSI hybrid.

Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission with paddle shifters are standard across the board.

What makes the Q5/SQ5 a popular line for Audi is that the vehicles have the characteristics of a sedan along with five-passenger seating and the versatility of an SUV.

We recently had a chance to test the 2015 SQ5 and found that it had many good things going for it. On the performance side, the SQ5 is impressive with great acceleration, good braking and stable handling. Audi lists a 0-100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

Natural Resources CanadaĄŻs fuel consumption ratings are 14.1/9.9/12.2 L/100 km city/highway/combined.

With its sport-tuned suspension, the SQ5 can carve tight corners with ease and at the same time offer a comfortable ride as we found even on our pothole-littered roads after a harsh winter in a vehicle clad with huge 21-inch wheels.

The Q5/SQ5 offers a feeling of stability with its quattro permanent all-wheel drive getting exactly the right amount of power to each wheel as required.

In normal driving, 60 per cent of the power is routed to the rear wheels. However, if the wheels of one axle lose grip, drive torque is immediately directed to the other axle to stabilize the vehicle.

On the outside, Audi describes the SQ5 as Ą°sharp without being showyĄą and Ą°sporty without being impractical.Ąą

I find the exterior styling a little uninspiring, but there are a few distinguishing hints, largely in badging, that indicate the SQ5 is something special.

Inside, however, the cabin is wonderfully finished in a simple yet classy way ĄŞ certainly an Audi strong point. The flat bottom steering wheel, sport seats, badges and other touches help set the SQ5 apart from the base models.

While the 2015 Q5 starts at $42,600 in Canada, think of the SQ5 as the top of the food chain in the Q5 lineup.

While the SQ5 is a compact offering, legroom front and rear is quite good. The front sport seats are supportive and comfortable with lots of adjustments and the rear seats slide fore and aft and recline.

With all seats in their upright position, there is 824 litres of cargo space, 1,622 litres with the rear seats folded.

On the safety front, the Q5/SQ5 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick +, its highest rating thanks to front crash prevention technology.

Perhaps because of the extensive powertrain lineup, the Q5/SQ5 is a sales leader in the competitive compact luxury crossover category where it is pitted against a host of other luxury sport crossovers like the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Lexus RX 350 F-Sport and even its stablemate, the Porsche Macan.

So for those who value performance in a premium compact crossover the SQ5 is hard to beat.
