For the record, the route is primarily Highway 401, not crawling along in cruise, but at the flow of traffic.

When I picked up the Sonata, it was showing 6.9L/100 km, fair for a hybrid.

One of the great advantages of a mild hybrid is you can get it up to 120 km/h, and if on a flat road surface, have the engine shut off and cruise on the battery alone.

Every time you coast or use the brakes, the battery is fed regenerative power.

Combining all of these and driving strictly in Ą°EcoĄą mode (more on modes below) I was able to get it down to 6.2L/100 km by the time I got to Strathroy.

On the way back, Lady Featherfoot (aka my good wife), without using cruise, got it down to 5.7L/100 km ¨C quite an achievement.

The next day I did about 60 km more, using every trick in the book and actually saw 5.3L/100 km.

Official NRCan ratings are 5.9/5.3/5.6L/100 km city/highway combined for the Base model. The Limited (as tested) and Ultimate are 6.0/5.5/5.8L/100 km. Reason for the higher numbers are the weight of the added equipment.

How the Sonata does it is by using a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder that replaces the 2.4-litre in the outgoing model. It is combined with a 38 kW motor inside the six-speed automatic transmission housing where it replaces the torque converter.

Hyundai calls its system Blue Drive with the engine producing 154 hp and 140 lb/ft of torque with the motorĄŻs 51 hp and 151 lb/ft of torque there is a combined 193 hp. Hyundai does not release torque figures, but my guess is about 250-260 lb/ft.

Energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery that uses polymer construction which helps make it smaller, but more energy dense. In fact, it is 13 per cent more powerful than the outgoing model.

These factors allow it be placed fully below the cargo floor instead of behind the back seat.

This is the first time I have witnessed this. It results in a 10 per cent increase in cargo volume to 380 litres, which Hyundai claims is class leading.

It also is just about the only hybrid you can buy with a 60/40 split/fold back seat and that leads to ample rear legroom because the battery pack doesnĄŻt cut into passenger volume.

There are two ways of seeing which way the energy is flowing by either the 4.2-inch display on the main instrument cluster or the eight-inch infotainment monitor at the top of the centre stack.

The Sonata Hybrid is also styled subtly differently to reduce the co-efficient of drag down to 0.24. One way Hyundai does this is by using special wheels with slate-like spokes to push air away from the wheel wells when moving.

The Hybrid does not scrimp on safety features, which include Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Traction Control, ABS and a rearview camera also comes standard. While projector headlamps are standard on the Sonata Hybrid, powerful Bi-Xenon HID headlamps with automatic High Beam Assist (HBA) are available.

Also available are Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Lane Departure Warning System.

A luxury car touch on the Hybrid is HyundaiĄŻs proximity-activated automatic Ą°Smart TrunkĄą opening system as standard.

I mentioned modes above and the Hybrid has Ą°NormalĄą and Ą°SportĄą in addition to Ą°EcoĄą that provides a power/gearing selection that covers most bases.

Luxury touches extend to an electronic parking brake with automatic vehicle hold, driverĄŻs Integrated Memory System, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, power front seats with four-way adjustable driver lumbar and Adaptive Cruise Control featuring stop-and-go capability are available on the Hybrid. The Sonata Hybrid Limited I drove also had the optional panoramic sunroof and rear side window sunshades.

With Lady Featherfoot in the back, the front passenger seat fully forward, the door shades in place and the panoramic roof open, she had a wonderful time reading the weekend paper cover-to-cover, while I had a wonderful time because she not commenting on my driving.

A good time was had by all!

Bottom line is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid combines all you expect from a Ą°normalĄą mid-size sedan with the added bonus of exceptional fuel economy.

There are numerous versions of the 911 within a 100,000 dollar price range however the Turbo version comes in near the top with an MSRP of $172,400 and has the performance to justify the price. The 6 cylinder Turbo produces 520 horsepower, goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 315 km/h.

If someone were to give me 200,000 dollars to spend on any car, it would be the Audi R8 V10 for $170,500. This would (hopefully) leave me enough money to pay for insurance, gas and maintenance for a few years. This raging bull churns out 700 horsepower from its enormous V12 engine, goes 0 to 100km/h in a scant 2.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 350 km/h. Of course the doors open vertically on this top of the line Lambo.

When we think of exotic sports cars Ferrari is one of the first names that comes to mind. The 458 Speciale is the epitome of performance and Marenallo Italian design. This thoroughbred stallion is visually stunning with jaw dropping performance. The 4.5L V8 boasts 570 horsepower rocketing the 458 Speciale from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds flat. Costing $275,900, there are faster cars for less but none look as striking as the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Honourable mention: McLaren 650S, starting MSRP $258,900

When we go beyond the half-million dollar mark there are several limited production super exotics that blast from zero to 100 km/h in less than three seconds and reach top speeds in excess of 300 km/h. However comparing these models is like splitting hairs in terms of performance stats and outrageous values that often exceed the listed MSRP. The fastest car from 0 to 100 is the 2015 Porsche 918 with a 2.2 second sprint and an $847,015 price tag. The current top speed champion is the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport which maxes out at 431 km/h and costs seven figures.

Anything over $500,000 is amazing and very subjective however letĄŻs think for a moment, if I were to win the lottery, what would my ultimate dream car be? When price is no object, it can be a difficult decision but here are a few of my personal favourites:

Accelerating 0 to 100 takes a scant 3 seconds and keeps going up to a top speed of 370 km/h. The twin turbo charged 6.0L V12 puts out 720 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The limited and exclusive Pagani Huayra costs over one million dollars.

Bottom line, if you crave speed and performance consider what youĄŻre willing to spend and there are several sports cars in each price bracket to choose from. I place as much value in safety, fuel efficiency, technology, comfort and ride characteristics plus overall quality of the vehicle, as pure performance stats. After all, you want a fast car to also be reliable and practical and suit your personal taste. ItĄŻs a great feeling to turn heads with what youĄŻre driving but you donĄŻt want to draw the wrong kind of attention and see flashing lights in your rear view mirror. When driving a fast car, always be aware of the speed limit.

EcoDiesel Not Available On Lower-priced Models.?

WhatĄŻs Best: Free diesel! Well, sort of free. But, for the summer, it is a no-charge option (normally $4,995) on Overland and Summit trim levels.WhatĄŻs Worst: EcoDiesel not available on lower-priced models.?WhatĄŻs Interesting: This Italian-built turbo-diesel for Fiat started off as a potential engine for the European Cadillac CTS when V M Motori was partially owned by GM.

With apologies to Bill Shakespeare, thatĄŻs a dang good question.

Especially for sport utility shoppers and Jeep Grand Cherokee fans.

The five-passenger Grand Cherokee has been holding down the top spot in the Jeep lineup for more than 20 years now, with a steady evolution of technologies and refinements keeping it competitive in the popular mid-size SUV segment.

The current fourth generation version was refreshed just last year. Changes included an exterior facelift with, among other things, new slimmer bi-xenon headlamps and new LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), a refined interior with new colours, open pore wood trim pieces and other upgrades, a new Eco mode, improved ride and handling tweaks and a new electric power steering system along with a brand new 8-speed automatic transmission.

And, oh yes, a new diesel engine offering.

The GC lineup already had all the powertrain bases pretty well covered, starting with a standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 making 290 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque while offering a fuel economy rating of 13.9/9.8L/100km (city/hwy).

For the Ą°more muscleĄą fans, an optional 5.7-litre V8 makes 360 hp and 390 lb/ft of torque while returning a 17.3/11.5L/100km (city/hwy) rating, the respectable highway numbers due to Fuel Saver cylinder-deactivation technology.

And, then thereĄŻs the maniacal 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with 475 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque and an 18.5/12.6L/100km (city/hwy) rating, powering the performance SRT machine.

But now, bolstering the Grand Cherokee lineup and tested here, the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, a turbo diesel unit, makes a class-leading 240 hp and 420 lb/ft of torque.

ItĄŻs that torque number that gets things done here, with the kind of stump pulling oomph that tows a best-in-class 3,266 kg (7,200 lb) in this 4X4 configuration.

Jeep is keeping things in the Fiat family with this engine, sourced from the VM Motori plant in Italy.

Funny thing is, this motorĄŻs origins trace back about 10 years ago to when GM was a part owner of VM Motori and a project was initiated to design a 3.0-litre diesel for the European version of their Cadillac CTS.

That was before the auto recession crunch, changes in ownership and changes in design.

This engineĄŻs come a long way since and, like most diesels, along with the towing muscle, it also offers a fuel economy advantage with a rating of 11.2/8.4L/100km (city/hwy).

After 665 km of mixed driving, my real world results came in at a wallet-pleasing 8.9L/100km (comb). Jeep likes to boast a potential 1,100 km range with this diesel but, even with my numbers, this Grand Cherokee could travel over a 1,000 km before a fill-up.

During the test, diesel fuel was also about a dime cheaper per litre so every 93.1-litre tankful would cost about $10 less. But, of course, thatĄŻs a bit of a crapshoot.

WeĄŻve seen diesel bounce on either side of the regular gas prices over the last few years.

There are a few caveats that might dissuade potential diesel buyers, like the minor glow plug delay and the bag-of-pots-and-pans clatter of a cold start morning, neither of which particularly bother me, particularly as the exhaust noise tends to smooth out quickly on cruising.

ThereĄŻs a little extra maintenance involved with a top-up of the 30-litre diesel exhaust fluid recommended annually or every 16,000 km. You can also do it yourself at a cost of about $2 per litre,

Diesel gas pumps are fewer and farther between. And, at the risk of sounding sexist, I find that women in particular, are not too fond of the smellier, greasier results of the diesel self-serve experience.

Ah, but the clincher for the Ą°it just doesnĄŻt make economic senseĄą crowd is the normal $4,995 extra cost for the diesel engine. I must admit, I might have wound up on the nay-saying side of the argument myself.

But then Jeep blindsided me with a summer promotion that removes the $4,995 extra charge and makes the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel a no-cost option.

ThatĄŻs right, a no-cost option deal that holds until August 31, 2015.

I might still quibble about the EcoDiesel being only available in the upper trim levels ¨C the Overland ($60,290) and Summit ($65,290) versions ¨C and not in the base Laredo ($41,395) and Limited ($51,490) models. Because if it were available for free across the board, it wouldnĄŻt just be a no-charge option, it would also be a no-brainer.

But while I still lean towards the standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 for the sake of entry-level pricing, for sport utility customers searching for an upgraded ride within the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and Summit trim levels, a free fuel efficient and powerful diesel option seems like an opportunity too good to miss.

How Do The Brakes Feel?

Before you visit Dealerships itĄŻs a good idea to prioritize which features are most important to make sure the vehicle youĄŻre offered to test drive is properly equipped. For example, if youĄŻre in the market for a mini-van and need to have access to the second and third rows, youĄŻll want to test out the seats to see how easily they flip, fold and slide for easy exit and entry for passengers. Alternatively, if itĄŻs configurable storage space you need, check to see if the seats can be easily removed or folded into the floor to create extra storage space.

The new truck youĄŻre dreaming about may look awesome but does it have adequate horsepower and torque to pull your toys? Buying an underpowered vehicle for your needs can cost you more in wear, tear and fuel consumption in the long run than investing in a bigger engine with more power up front. I made the mistake of purchasing an AWD SUV with a small 4-cylinder engine a few years ago. The power to weight ratio wasnĄŻt appropriate for the amount of driving I was doing and the engine needed frequent trips to the service department for repairs by year 3 and 140,000km on the odometer.

How do you measure quality? Is it the thickness of the padding in the seats, the materials used to trim the door and dash, the amount of plastic vs. leather, the touch of a knob, switch, lever or handle? How does the door sound when you close it? Is there wind noise sneaking through the gaps while youĄŻre on the highway? How are the wiper blades ¨C do they look durable or like theyĄŻll wear out after a few rain storms? Check under the hood for the type of strut it has: refilling your wiper fluid is easy with a gas strut but can be a pain with a manual rod. The same can be said for the trunk hinges: Are they mounted outside of the trunk leaving the entire space for cargo or does the elbow brackets come down into the trunk where they might crush your eggs and reduce space?

While you sit in the driverĄŻs seat take note of whatĄŻs around you and how easy it is to reach and operate your favourite features. Is the interior intuitive? How does the seat feel? Is there a centre armrest with storage? Will the cup holders adequately hold your morning extra large double-double? Can you adjust the height of the seat belt so it rests comfortably across your torso and not across your neck? Can you reach the knobs and dials on the HVAC and infotainment systems? Is there an automatic trunk release feature available from the key fob? An extra power outlet in the back seat for passengers? Does the steering wheel tilt or adjust to accommodate your body type? Is your phone compatible with the onboard electronics system?

Test drives give car buyers an opportunity to try before they buy, so take your time, ask lots of questions, try out everything and imagine it in your life for the next several years. Do you love it? Serenity Now. You Want Quiet Inside A Car?

Saying the word Ą°wagonĄą in the automotive realm is almost like uttering an expletive. People tend to be somewhat offended by this term. IĄŻm not entirely sure why.

Wagons, sport wagons, five-doors, wannabe SUVs, or however you desire to label this type of automobileĄŻs configuration, is nothing shy of amazing.

My first car was a 1991 Toyota Corolla Wagon. Horribly ugly ¨C complete with a tacky rear spoiler that likely did little to nothing for aerodynamics ¨C but incredibly giving. I could fit five people inside, a ton of gear in the trunk, it was a five-speed manual AND had all-wheel drive. She could do no wrong.

Flash forward two and a half decades and wagons, I feel, are on the way out. SUVs and crossovers have crossed into their territory and gobbled up the sales. Though, a shining example of why wagons are still completely relevant and utterly cool can be exemplified through the 2015.5 Volvo V60 Cross Country.

ItĄŻs a glowing testament as to why wagons donĄŻt suck. HereĄŻs why:

1) Sure it has five doors, but it still looks amazing. That must have to do with the Swedish design and engineering. ItĄŻs sleek and fashion forward, both on the inside and out.

2) It is so smooth to drive. You can take on sinuous curves, drive highway speeds, and if you so desire, put its ground clearance to work (it has 65mm more clearance than the V60 wagon) all in the matter of moments.

3) Serenity now. You want quiet inside a car? You got it with the V60. The zombie apocalypse could be happening right outside the comfort of incredible leather seats and youĄŻd still be able to sleep.

4) Not all wagons are built the same. In fact, not all V60s are built the same. But even with the lesser of the available engines in the V60 lineup (T5/T6/Polestar), this Cross CountryĄŻs 2.5L, 5-cylinder, turbocharged engine with 250 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque will still get you excited to drive.

5) You forget youĄŻre driving a wagon. The beauty of the V60 is that it handles like a boss. YouĄŻll forget your extra junk in the trunk and love life, one corner at a time.

2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Revealed

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2016 Jetta GLI, the sedan equivalent of the Golf GTI.

Equipped with a specially tuned sport suspension and 210 hp, 2.0-liter, TSI turbocharged and direct-injection EA888 four-cylinder engine, the GLI offers a compelling blend of value, performance and practicality.

For 2016, the GLI gets a bold new look highlighted by an aggressive front fascia that incorporates a honeycomb grille and foglights, along with a new rear bumper design that has a diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts.

All 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI models have 18-inch Mallory design aluminum-alloy wheels, shod with standard all-season tires or optional summer performance tires.

Inside, 2016 GLI models benefit from the new MIB 2 infotainment system that incorporates the full suite of USB and Car-Net connectivity.

Volvo Cars Standard Safety Technology Cuts Accidents by 28 per cent

One of the most comprehensive scientific studies performed on collision avoidance systems in cars reveals that Volvo CarsĄŻ standard City Safety technology reduces insurance claims for rear-end frontal collisions by 28 per cent.

Based on real-life accumulated insurance claims data from the Swedish insurers If and Volvia, the study of City Safety performance conclusively reveals the real-life value of auto braking collision avoidance systems.

The main benefit of City Safety is its ability to reduce the incidence of whiplash and other neck-related injuries caused by low-speed traffic accidents.

The secondary benefit to Volvo car drivers is a reduction in accident damage to their cars and the costs that this incurs.

The study is based on robust insurance company data which covers over 160,000 vehicle years in traffic making it unique in the study of collision avoidance systems.

The figures from the study show that cars equipped with the first two generations of City Safety (active automatic braking up to 30/50 km/h in certain traffic situations) were involved in 28 per fewer accidents and subsequent insurance claims

Volvo CarsĄŻ City Safety technology also delivers more immediate benefits to Volvo drivers, with insurance companies offering discounts of between 20-25 per cent on insurance premiums on several markets thanks to this innovative technology.

Collision avoidance systems are increasingly popular with motorists that spend a lot of time behind the wheel in stop-and-go commuting traffic where the risk for low speed collisions is quite high.

Volvo Cars introduced City Safety as standard in new models from 2008. The first generation of the technology worked at speeds up to 18 mph. This was subsequently increased to 31 mph from 2013.

In 2015 City Safety has been updated in the XC90 and now operates at all speeds.
