Taking an entirely different tack, we have the 1997 volkswagen passat and finish to the volkswagen passat diesel estate between too high and too low. It shuffles up to 60 mph from a stop in just over seven seconds, but it's plenty for around-town commutes and returns decent fuel economy. It’s important to understand that many deductions do not apply to the overall cost of the policy. Simply put, the cost of owning a vehicle is the difference between what you pay for it and what you sell it for. Where I noticed the biggest difference was in the gearshift: I preferred the previous-generation's heavier, chunkier feel. Despite their relative popularity (VW sold nearly 110,000 wagons in North America - 20% of production overall), they somehow manage to stand apart from the crowd. And VW North America Region CEO Hinrich Woebcken has promised VWVortex directly that we’ll see manual transmissions right from the start, and an all-new GLI within a year. Some 228,236 cars could be affected by the recall, it said.

OK, So WhatĄŻs The Catch?

WhatĄŻs Best: $10,000 price chop for new entry-level Coupe Enthusiast Edition.WhatĄŻs Worst: Sacrifices to be made for the price cut. Design is getting dated.WhatĄŻs Interesting: Sales have already bumped up due to the price cut but there are rumours of a future, lighter, smaller replacement that might simply be called the Z with, hopefully, an efficient powertrain lineup that starts with a turbo four-cylinder choice.

BODY STYLE: Two-door sport car/coupe.

The steering wheel felt alive under my fingers.

A stomp of the throttle prodded the engine with the snarl of instant gratification.

The handling was quick and crisp, the brakes authoritatively taming the speed bursts of this beast as we carved country road corners, pirouetted through esses, and shot through traffic gaps in the cut and thrust of urban driving.

Ahh, but thereĄŻs an inherent problem with this kind of performance.

Because the quicker the car is, the shorter my patience gets.

RELATED: Nissan reveals fan-sourced Project 370Z

The power and agility, the exuberance of noisy acceleration, that sense of can-do-anything ability tends to engender a hyperactive impatience when youĄŻre sharing the road with seemingly mere mortals who are slowly and uncertainly doddering about in minivans and cumbersome sport ute land barges, hesitating over lane changes, inexplicably braking for phantom reasons, and just generally not getting the hell out of your way.

I usually resort to deep breathing, maybe an Enya playlist, or the calming Spa channel. And I remind myself that I am usually a part of that same slow-moving herd.

But IĄŻm also reminded of just how much fun a Nissan Z can be.

And it takes some reminding because, 45 years since the first Z appeared, and with only minor changes over the last two generations, itĄŻs easy to take the Z for granted and not give it the attention it deserves.

But for the 2016 model year, Nissan has added a new Coupe Enthusiast Edition base model ($29,998) that drops the entry-level price by a whopping $10,000.

Now, thatĄŻs sure to make potential customers pay attention.

That kind of move goes against the grain for most car companies, where the steady evolution of bigger, more expensive models is a more usual trend.

Even NissanĄŻs sport car lineup of Zs have tended to get porkier and more fully loaded with each generation.

This new base model still harnesses NissanĄŻs award-winning 332 hp 3.7-litre DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. This powertrain combo is rated at 13.3/9.3L/100km (city/hwy) but if fuel economy is a big concern, youĄŻre shopping in the wrong aisle, bub. My real world averages worked out to 12L/100km (comb) even with occasional outbursts of adrenalized lunacy.

Our tester, dipped nicely in Gun Metallic paint, stands on handsome complementary black-finished 18-inch alloy wheels and comes standard with a sport tuned suspension, bi-functional Xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, black woven carbon seat cloth interior, Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Start, power windows, power locks, two 12V outlets, USB connection, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, automatic climate control and illuminated steering wheel controls.

OK, so whatĄŻs the catch? What are we giving up for the $10,000 price chop?

Well, while I wouldnĄŻt exactly label the Coupe Enthusiast Edition a Ą°stripperĄą, there are sacrifices to be made, namely:

No available automatic transmissionNo viscous limited-slip rear differentialManually-adjusted cloth seats instead of leatherNo heated/ventilated seat featureNo 7.0-inch VGA touch-sensitive LCD display screen (a cubby storage area in the same space instead)No VoiceLink recognitionNo RearView monitor or NavigationNo Homelink transceiverA 4-speaker audio system without satellite radio instead of the BOSE 6-speaker upgradeNo Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or Active Sound Enhancement (ASE)No auxiliary audio/video input jacksNo auto dimming rearview mirror or heated outside mirrorsNo aluminum pedals or cargo coverSimpler Ą°ZĄą side badging without LED illumination

But while I might also miss the 19-inch wheels and SychroRev Match throttle-blipping available in higher trim levels, thereĄŻs nothing on that list of deletions above that I canĄŻt live without for a $10,000 price cut.

Customers who need the extra do-dads can still opt for the Touring Coupe ($39,998), Touring Sport Coupe ($43,998), the NISMO (Nissan Motorsports) Coupe ($47,998) or the convertible lineup with the Touring Black Top ($49,498) Touring Sport Black Top ($53,498) or Touring Sport Bourdeaux Top model($54,998).

Nissan 370Z Coupe 2016 hatch

The one thing this pared-down Coupe Enthusiast Edition definitely does benefit from is a leaner and meaner mass reduction, courtesy of being stripped to its bare essentials. It weighs in at 1,497 kg, about 100 kg less than a fully loaded model, even 50 kg lighter than the lean NISMO (1,547 kg), giving it a very comparable power-to-weight ratio to the performance model.

And that new Ą°less is moreĄą philosophy may well be the new trend for a future revision that will allow Nissan to go head-to-head with class competitors like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, Mustang V6 and Mazda MX-5.

There are rumours of an all-new, downsized, lighter and more affordable Z model that will be designed to tap into the essential spirit of the original 240Z with styling and value aimed at a whole new generation of buyers.

Stay tuned.

The Ultimate Canadian Northern Adventure?

I had been warned.

But like a lot of menĄŞparticularly auto journalistsĄŞany ?suggestion I may not be up to a driving task was an affront to my perceived abilities.

I say ĄŽperceived,ĄŻ as my hope that motoring in the U.K. should come easily was based on an erroneous belief that having driven on the left in the Bahamas somehow prepared me for what was ahead.

It had not.

My schooling began in Manchester AirportĄŻs parking lot, where I reflexively opened the driver door of our hostĄŻs Peugeot, which I obviously wasnĄŻt driving.

Ą°AhemĄ After you, Rob.Ąą

An easy recovery, and quick note to self that the steering wheel was on now the right.

The ensuing one-hour car ride to Endon, a bustling village near Stoke-on-Trent, began with yet more clues that my initial bravado was misplaced.

Exiting the airport from its narrow, traffic-choked roads, woven with multiple exits (and donĄŻt get me started on the signage), made the Pearson experience seem like childĄŻs play.

My wifeĄŻs cousin blessed us with the scenic route, which involved a series of slim two lane roads, copious roundabouts and pastoral country lanes, which were best suited to one car, not two.

Indeed, many of the roadways here pre-date the automobile, often by centuries. Should you meet any oncoming traffic, be prepared to pull over, providing there isnĄŻt a hedgerow, or ancient home/pub/barn at the roadĄŻs edge preventing this.

RELATED:?The ParentĄŻs Survival Guide for the Family Road Trip?

But thatĄŻs just part of the daily routine for our local hosts, and arrival in Endon was quickly followed by a relaxing dinner at the local pub ¨C the 155-year-old TravellerĄŻs Rest. It was thankfully within walking distance, but IĄŻd be driving soon enough.

The UKĄŻs motorways are home to many makes and models that have either disappeared from our continent, or simply never came. I remember the Vauxhalls, Citroens, Peugeots and Renaults from my teen years as an enthusiast, and most were rubbish.

Mind you, the 1970s and 1980s werenĄŻt stellar years for many automakers.

Times have changed, and youĄŻll now see plenty of these marques, sporting nameplates like Corsa, Picasso and Twingo, along with offerings from Skoda (Czech Republic), SEAT (Spain) and Dacia (Romania).

Ford Fiesta and Focus are top sellers, and Nissan moves plenty of vehicles here, such as the Qashqai, which is about the size of the Kia Sportage I would receive from KiaĄŻs press office.

What became apparent from this automotive smorgasbord wasnĄŻt so much that Britons had diverse tastes in motoring, but that they preferred more compact rides.

This is partly due to the narrower tarmac, with the UKĄŻs higher fuel pricesĄŞroughly double what we payĄŞsealing ?the deal.

Which is why my tester, a diesel version of the Sportage, made so much sense. Not only would its 740-litre cargo capacity (1,547 litres with 60/40 second row folded) easily handle luggage for four, but its fuel economy of 31/46.3/39.2 mpg (city/hwy/comb) would mean fewer stops for petrol at the equivalent of $2.24 CDN per litre.

The Sportage was also nimble enough for local traffic. Although powertrains included 1.6-litre gas engines and 1.7-litre diesels, mine was the top-trim 2.0-litre turbo diesel that delivered 181 hp and a solid 289 lb/ft of torque.

It was, however, a little wider than most vehicles here, which became apparent on my first day of driving. More than once my wife nervously pointed out I was getting close to the curb. Sitting on the right, it took a few miles before I had an accurate sense of the vehicleĄŻs left boundary.

But eventually it came, and thankfully without losing a side mirror or badly scuffing the tires. This heightened awareness would serve us well, with more relatives to visit, a trip to Blackpool and the Coronation Street tour ahead.

Even better was a two-hour trip to Conwy Castle in Wales ¨C a stunning medieval heritage site that is not to be missed.

The drive connected several Ą°AĄą roads (not the wider, faster Ą°MĄą motorways), cutting through numerous small towns and villages. Which sometimes meant roundabouts every mile or two.

Speed limits could reach 60 or 70 mph, but the lanes arenĄŻt much wider than the Sportage. And with a curb or occasional building on the left and continuous oncoming traffic to the right, thereĄŻs little room to wander.

Factor in the many forks and oddly angled splits in the road (thereĄŻs no grid here), and you soon realize that we North Americans are spoiled.

Forget about unwinding to your favourite tunes, scanning the countryside or fiddling with the GPS. Motoring here requires oneĄŻs full attention.

ItĄŻs better on the Ą°MĄą highways, although our UK road trip to Blackpool on the M6 was no more relaxing than rush hour on the 401. Mind you, traffic does move at a better clip.

Which leads to my final observation that the challenges here have created a better driver. I have no stats to prove this, but my wife commented that during our week on the road, we encountered not a single traffic accident.

Hard to say, as I had my eyes firmly fixed on the road, signs and other motorists, lest we end up in a fiery wreck.

Thank God we ditched the car before London.

Four-wheel Driving Is A Luxury

I was recently invited to my friendĄŻs cottage in Sundridge, Ontario. For those of you who donĄŻt know, Sundridge is between 250-300 kilometres North-East of Toronto (depending on where you are departing from). My drive was exactly 278 kilometres away from Sundridge. According to my GPS I anticipated to get there after a 2.5 hour driveĄ and that I did!

We went up in the peak of cottage season and on a weekend when the weather was expected to be hot and skies clear! As exciting as that sounds, this meant there was going to be a lot of traffic. Something I recommend in these instances is getting on the road when there wonĄŻt be a lot of traffic to avoid delays. Anytime between the morning rush and the afternoon rush is ideal. We left around 1pm.

Here is a recap of what I suggest you ensure your vehicle is equipped with while on long drives:

A full tank of gas! Save yourself the extra stop.A car phone charger (for my cell phone, I rely on my GPS and it drains the battery on my cell)$20.00 ¨C my jeep always has a $20.00 bill in it as emergency cash. I stash it away so that I am never tempted to grab it out ¨C you never know when or why you will need cash and it is always good in case of emergencies. My CAA cardĄfor obvious reasonsA flashlightĄ seriouslyHand Sanitizer! No matter how many times I wash my hands on a road trip, they donĄŻt feel clean enough!Snacks/Water ¨C If you want to avoid having unnecessary stops, pack snacks and water so that if you do get hungry, itĄŻs right there in the car with you!

?I was particularly excited to go to Sundridge because it has a lot of trails. I have been looking for the opportunity to off-road and get my tires full of mud all summer longĄ and this was it!

Before Mudding:

Search for actual Four-Wheel Driving trails that are designated for off-roading. In Southern Ontario there are 5 trails (all of them are a bit of a drive away from Toronto). You cannot take your SUV off-roading just anywhere. Often, big parks are conservation areas and four-wheel driving through them can be harmful to the preserved forestry. A great website to check out nearby trails is: Ontariotrails.on.ca?(If you know of other off-roading trails in Southern Ontario, please share them in the comments section!). If you click the link youĄŻll notice there is a trail near Sundridge, Ontario. However, my friend owns a lot of acreage specifically for outdoor adventure sports! There is a trail right on his estate.

Research your vehicle. Before doing any type of extreme driving, research your SUVĄŻs year/make/model to not only ensure maximum safety, but to also know how you can maximize your fun! Know your vehiclesĄŻ limits, especially its level of ground clearance which is usually limited by the differential. If you have read some of my articles you know that I drive a Jeep Liberty. The Jeep Liberty is considered more of a luxury Jeep vehicle as opposed to a Wrangler, which is sporty and commonly seen as the off-roading Jeep. You donĄŻt see Liberties mudding very often. Thankfully, I connected with other Liberty drivers on a Jeep forum online and they were able to tell me their Liberty off-road driving experiences.

Make sure the maintenance on your car is up to date. This is a general tip you should follow all of the time (whether youĄŻre off-roading or not). You definitely want to make sure your car is not in need of anything before entering an adventurous trail where its performance will really be tested. This ties into my next pointĄ do not go alone. Trails are very secluded, if something goes wrong with your ride, you could be stuck there for a while before getting assistance. You could also get lost. I started having fun and got carried away exploring, thankfully I was with someone who knew the area well and was able to guide me back out of the forest safely.

Test out your four-wheel driving skills on small spots before getting into more extensive off-roading. Slowly go over a few light hills at first and really get a feel for how your car handles bumps. A huge part of off-roading is to thoroughly understand how your vehicle handles and being comfortable with the driving conditions.

RELATED:?2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Review

Our day was beautiful. My friendĄŻs Sundridge trail has a lot of scenic areas! Although it was hot and sunny outside, there were parts of the forest that were in complete shade. The air was dry, but in the forest it was fresh and moist which left some spots with mud puddles! I accelerated through some of the mud puddles just to learn the hard way that this is the worst idea! When four-wheel driving, your best bet is to avoid soft terrain or at least slowly drive through it. My wheels spun and I started rutting (getting stuck). It wasnĄŻt a deep mud puddle so luckily I was able to get out of it. This was definitely avoidableĄ which leads me to my next point of adviceĄ

Educate yourself. Research the area you are going to as much as possible. Talk to people who have gone on this trail. I was fortunate to be with the land owner so he knew the area well. However, that wonĄŻt be the case for you every time you visit a new off-roading site. Get out of your car and walk every once in a while. Walk on the ground in front of you to ensure that it is stable terrain and not dangerous or swampy. There are vulnerable spots such as soft soils and seasonal nesting or breeding areas. Another aspect of off-roading you should look out for are twigs and tree branches. My Jeep is black, even the slightest scratch on it is noticeable. Regardless of the colour of your vehicle, you probably want to avoid scratches. Tree branches are everywhere and itĄŻs very easy to get a scratch!

Keep in mind that the forest is crawling with bugs! A lot of them jump at the opportunity to come and sit in the car, bug spray was a big help. I suggest hosing down your SUV after your drive; it will help remove any insects that might be lingering in the outer crevices.

I must say, my Jeep Liberty may be the least sporty of all the Jeeps, but it did a really good job in the forest. I kept it on Four-Wheel Low for most of my drive, which is recommended for off-roading. Altogether I really enjoyed the experience and would definitely do it again. One of the most important things I researched before going on my trip was Tread Lightly. Four-wheel driving is a luxury. As entertaining as it is, if this is something you are going to do, visit Tread LightlyĄŻs website to educate yourself on how you can enjoy this outdoor sport responsibly. Tread Lightly is an organization that teaches how to minimize your impact on the outdoors, how to enjoy yourself while being as eco-friendly as possible, and how to off-road in a conscientious manner. Happy Off-Roading!

2018 Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0 Review ?

WhatĄŻs Best: Tiny footprint fits where other small cars canĄŻtWhatĄŻs Worst: Cramped back seat ¨C but usableWhatĄŻs Interesting: Not much larger than a smart, but can seat three

For example, swapping a Porsche 911 for ScionĄŻs tiniest ride ¨C the 2015 Scion iQ?microcar ¨C may mean getting a little sand kicked in my face in the cut and thrust of our busy highways.

Attempting to safely merge or change lanes in a Porsche isnĄŻt always welcomed by aggressive GTA drivers, but their attempts to ĄŽclose the gapĄŻ arenĄŻt necessarily a problem for a 430-hp Carrera 4 GTS.

In my 94-hp iQ, however, IĄŻll be forced to rely on their goodwill. A diminutive lamb amongst the high-powered sports sedans, behemoth SUVs and pickup trucks, not to mention speeding eighteen-wheelers that could easily reduce me to a hood ornament.

On a more positive note, I could buy nine iQs for roughly the same price as last weekĄŻs autobahn burner.

Although this fuel-sipping urban runabout is often compared with the smart ĄŽfortwoĄŻ coupe, itĄŻs larger in all dimensions, except height. With a wider track, protruding wheel arches and tires pushed to the corners, the iQ appears more stable and firmly planted than smartĄŻs juicebox design.

iQ may have the illusion of being nearly as wide as it is long, but engineering tweaks like a compact air-conditioning unit and steering column, and an inverted front-mounted differential, allow for a very short front end. Its flat gas tank beneath the floor results in almost no rear overhang.

2015 Scion iQ interior

Being 14 inches longer than smart has given the iQ just enough room for a back seat. Which only accommodates one passenger ¨C not two ¨C as thereĄŻs virtually no legroom behind the driver.

2015 Scion iQ backseat

ThereĄŻs a little, however, behind the front passenger. Thanks to a narrower dash (sans glovebox), this seat has been offset slightly ahead of the driverĄŻs, allowing room for a third occupant.

But not just anybody, as my even five-foot-nine frame barely fit, and that was with the front seat liberally forward. Still, thatĄŻs an advantage over ScionĄŻs Euro competitor, and with the remaining 50/50 backrest folded flat, thereĄŻs still room for briefcases or a small load of groceries.

2015 Scion iQ cargo

That being said, the iQ isnĄŻt an ideal family ride, but it can work as a second vehicle.

For starters, its 10-foot length means you can often squeeze it onto the lower driveway (between sidewalk and road), which in my neighbourhood leaves typical compacts and subcompacts hanging their butts over the curb.

Parking tags anybody?

Secondly, itĄŻs thrifty on fuel, with ratings of 6.5/6.3/6.4 L/100 km (city/hwy/comb). My own results were close, and without being overly light of foot, drove an entire week on only $28 worth of petrol.

RELATED: 2015 Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0 Review ?

Key to this frugality is a DOHC 16-valve 1.3-litre four-cylinder, mated to a CVT driving the front wheels.

I wonĄŻt say acceleration is neck snapping, but itĄŻs on par with most subcompacts, thanks to its 965 kg (2,127) curb weight. And once the CVT spools up, the iQ moves just fine.

Slide the shift lever to Ą°sportĄą and the transmission is remapped to keep the revs in a higher range, taking full advantage of this little four bangerĄŻs 89 lb/ft of torque when you plant the pedal.

IĄŻve heard griping from some journos about the performance, but the iQ is not positioned ¨C nor priced ¨C as a pocket rocket. If thatĄŻs what you seek, open your wallet wider for a Fiat 500 Abarth or a Golf GTI.

And unlike a smart I had tested a few years back, the iQ isnĄŻt scary on the highway. Road manners are pretty good considering its short wheelbase, and although it sits back when you accelerate, and dips on hard braking, the car feels firmly rooted to the asphalt, with minimal buffeting at highway speeds.

Inside, front passengers are treated to grippy and supportive bucket seats, with plenty of head and shoulder room. It feels surprisingly spacious, although you can turn around and almost touch its rear window.

2015 Scion iQ front seats

ThereĄŻs plenty of hard plastic, but the mixture of tones and textures, along with piano black accents and silver finishes, helps it look less bargain basement.

RELATED:?2015 Scion tC Release Series 9.0 Review

The instrument cluster is simple: speedo, tach and multi-info screen, along with a centre stack that is equally spartan.

Three rotary knobs manage climate, topped by air vents and a 6.1-inch infotainment touchscreen encased in what appears to be Darth VaderĄŻs helmet.

The iQ comes up short on storage, with no bin (or armrest) between the seats and only a single cupholder to contain oneĄŻs wallet and/or smart phone.

At the monospec price of $17,260, you get a pretty decent equipment list: air conditioning, six-speaker infotainment, auto up/down windows, keyless entry, tilt steering and more. And its 16-inch steel wheels can be upgraded to alloys ¨C part of a long list of dealer- or factory-installed options that include lowering springs, spoiler, sway bar and upgraded audio.

The iQ is in its last model year in Canada, and is pricier than many larger subcompacts. But microcars are not as much about thrift as they are about being a little different.

And perhaps making a statement that small neednĄŻt be boring.

The Summer And Early Fall Are?

Road trips are great, but guess whatĄŻs even better? A road trip with an exciting destination to look forward to this Fall! The summer and early fall are?a great time to pack up the car and spend the day exploring new places and attractions. These ten road trips are some of my personal favourites or destinations that my family and friends have traveled to. For complete driving directions please do additional research or ask your friendly GPS to help you out. Many of these trips have multiple ways to drive there, so choose what route is best for you. Each trip is packed with adventures around every corner.

1.?Prince Edward County:

I hear from friends this is the Ą°ITĄą place to be ¨C and itĄŻs only two hours from Toronto in South Eastern Ontario. There are five entry points to the County. Take exit 522 for Wooler Road / Country Road 40 toward Trenton. Many families I know have taken their kids to the Sandbanks Provincial Park and absolutely loved it. There are three sandy beaches, sandbars, and coastal sand dunes. Definitely bring a pail and shovel! You can also hike along the trails, swim in the shallow water, go boating, biking and even camp for the night! If you have time check out their theatre scene, museums, studios, galleries, or go shopping for antiques or the latest trends! And if itĄŻs an adult only journey, you will have your choice of 40 awesome wineries to choose from. (Have a designated driver!)

2.?Niagara Falls:?

Tried, tested and true, my son and I have been traveling to Niagara Falls annually and are never disappointed. From Toronto itĄŻs about a 90-minute drive. Take the Queen Elizabeth Way and follow signs for Niagara/East Hamilton/Fort Erie.

RELATED: Riding Dirty Off-Roading in Sundridge, Ontario?

We love the excitement of Clifton Hill such as mini golfing with dinosaurs, the massive SkyWheel with spectacular views, the little souvenir shops and the crazy wax museums and haunted houses! You will have no shortage of hotels, restaurants or activities to choose from. We also love riding the Maid of the Mist in our rain gear. Definitely bring your camera!

3.?St. JacobĄŻs County?

Located in the Waterloo Region itĄŻs about a 90-minute drive from Toronto, on Highway 401, Exit # 278 Highway 8 Kitchener.

St. JacobĄŻs County is home to CanadaĄŻs largest Farmers Market that is open year round, where you can pick up fresh pastries, bread, fruit, veggies, flowers and maple syrup (How Canadian!). You can also browse through original artwork, jewelry, and various craft vendors. St. JacobĄŻs is a great place to spend the weekend and you can choose from hotels, bed and breakfasts or camping!

4.?Barrie:?

Multiple friends of mine with kids drive to Barrie to enjoy the water, beaches, and parks in warmer months. Barrie is located in Central Ontario on the Western Shore of Lake Simcoe. We love going to Barrie because itĄŻs not too far yet it has a totally different vibe than Toronto. There are several ways to drive to Barrie; one route is the 400 North and takes just over an hour. If you get hungry and didnĄŻt pack a picnic lunch, check out the delicious Boon?BurgerĄŞCanadaĄŻs first all vegan burger restaurantĄŞlocated at 112 Dunlop Street East.

5. Bradford: Wishing Well Sanctuary?

Why go to Bradford you ask? For the 66 rescued farm animals of course! The Wishing Well Sanctuary is our favourite way to spend the day.?We love hugging the sheep and goats, patting the pigs and feeding the cows. It is also a center for humane education, healing and personal growth through seminars and workshops, all which share the goal of promoting emotional well being and peace. ItĄŻs a private residence so you canĄŻt just drop in; there are specific visitor days. Sanctuary tours are held on the last Saturday of every month and the second Sunday of each month?from March through November. ItĄŻs about an hour drive from Toronto on Highway 400; Wishing Well is located at 2710 10th Line on the North Side ¨C look for the Wishing Well Sign!

6.?Vineland:

Vineland is a community within the Niagara Region and the Town of Lincoln and just over an hour drive from Toronto. Take the QEW/403 towards Hamilton and then Beamsville will get you there. Vineland is known for the wineries, vineyards, orchards and restaurants that feature local produce. If you want to check out Vineland Estates Winery this may be one of those road trips without the kids. The winery is open all year round and there are tours of the vineyard, wine tastings, seminars, historic sites, restaurants, stone houses and stunning views. ItĄŻs beautiful to go in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

7.?Muskoka:?

Muskoka is known for itĄŻs adventurous yet relaxing cottage life. From Toronto, take the highway 401 East to highway 400 north towards Barrie and Orillia, and itĄŻs about a two-hour drive. Once you are there if you want to enjoy scenic drives there are specific driving tours such as MuskokaĄŻs rugged coast or MuskokaĄŻs heart. Or if you have reached your final destination take your pick of things to do; there are beaches, boat cruises, waterfalls, golfing, biking, entertainment and museums. If itĄŻs a special celebration and money is no object, you can splurge and go to the spa ¨C there are plenty to choose from. There are also enough restaurants to guarantee you will find something that suits your palate! Many people choose to stay overnight at family friendly lodges, bed and breakfasts, cottage resorts or hotels.

8.?Collingwood:?

There are multiple ways to drive North to Collingwood, such as highway 400 towards Wasaga Beach or Airport Road North. Choose your route depending on the time of year you are traveling and if you prefer scenery or the highway. Collingwood is home to some great parks, an arts and culture scene, museums, relaxing waterfront, a conservation area; and the Collingwood Scenic Caves Nature Preserve that is great for visitors of all ages and known as one of CanadaĄŻs great natural wonders. There is also an amazing hiking trail that features a 126 meter suspension bridge (420ft) that you can walk across that hangs 25 meters (82 ft) above the valley floor and overlooks Georgian Bay area. ?A friend suggested checking out the Elvis Festival that runs for a few days each summer ¨C something to look forward to in 2016!

9. Point Pelee National Park:

This national park is located in Essex County in Southwestern Ontario. The driving directions are complex so please refer to the Ą°How To Get ThereĄą section of the website. My adventurous parents took a road trip to Point Pelee this summer and because itĄŻs about a four-hour drive, they decided to stay for several days in nearby Leamington. In Point Pelee you can go hiking, walk along the boardwalk, bird watch, rent bikes or canoes, swim and enjoy a picnic on the beach.

Point Pelee is the southernmost point of main land in Canada and you can ride a shuttle to the very tip. ItĄŻs a destination my father (Errol Porter) has always wanted to visit and he took these photos of the boardwalk going through the marsh and the rocks which are a few kilometres south at the farthest point.

10. Brampton / Tree Top Trekking

The most recent road trip we took was to Tree Top Trekking in Brampton (reservations are required). ItĄŻs about an hour drive from Toronto. Located at Heart Lake Conservation Area, drive along highway 401 and exit at Sandlewood Road. Follow the signs to Heart Lake Road and turn north on Heart Lake Road to # 10818. If you love eco-adventures as much as we do, this is the place to be (Kids must be 9 years old so this was the first year my son was old enough to go). You can easily spend the day exploring the forest doing climbing challenges, log bridges, obstacles and zip lining. We packed a lunch and spent the afternoon there. Our favourite part was the zip line over Hear LakeĄŞabsolutely breathtakingĄŞand ?you will feel like a flying bird!

Serenity Now. You Want Quiet Inside A Car?

Saying the word Ą°wagonĄą in the automotive realm is almost like uttering an expletive. People tend to be somewhat offended by this term. IĄŻm not entirely sure why.

Wagons, sport wagons, five-doors, wannabe SUVs, or however you desire to label this type of automobileĄŻs configuration, is nothing shy of amazing.

My first car was a 1991 Toyota Corolla Wagon. Horribly ugly ¨C complete with a tacky rear spoiler that likely did little to nothing for aerodynamics ¨C but incredibly giving. I could fit five people inside, a ton of gear in the trunk, it was a five-speed manual AND had all-wheel drive. She could do no wrong.

Flash forward two and a half decades and wagons, I feel, are on the way out. SUVs and crossovers have crossed into their territory and gobbled up the sales. Though, a shining example of why wagons are still completely relevant and utterly cool can be exemplified through the 2015.5 Volvo V60 Cross Country.

ItĄŻs a glowing testament as to why wagons donĄŻt suck. HereĄŻs why:

1) Sure it has five doors, but it still looks amazing. That must have to do with the Swedish design and engineering. ItĄŻs sleek and fashion forward, both on the inside and out.

2) It is so smooth to drive. You can take on sinuous curves, drive highway speeds, and if you so desire, put its ground clearance to work (it has 65mm more clearance than the V60 wagon) all in the matter of moments.

3) Serenity now. You want quiet inside a car? You got it with the V60. The zombie apocalypse could be happening right outside the comfort of incredible leather seats and youĄŻd still be able to sleep.

4) Not all wagons are built the same. In fact, not all V60s are built the same. But even with the lesser of the available engines in the V60 lineup (T5/T6/Polestar), this Cross CountryĄŻs 2.5L, 5-cylinder, turbocharged engine with 250 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque will still get you excited to drive.

5) You forget youĄŻre driving a wagon. The beauty of the V60 is that it handles like a boss. YouĄŻll forget your extra junk in the trunk and love life, one corner at a time.

33,350) With The Regular Length Box

WhatĄŻs Best:?A combination of finesse and muscle ¨C the Canyon offers real truck payload potential in a more urban-adaptable package with a smaller mid-size footprint.
WhatĄŻs Worst:?ItĄŻs a truck and, if youĄŻre not into them, the un-laden bouncing takes a little getting used to. But you will make a lot of new friends on moving day!
WhatĄŻs Interesting:?While some manufacturers ¨C notably Ford and Dodge ¨C have given up on smaller trucks, GM sees some segment potential. Yes, GMĄŻs bigger Sierra and Silverado trucks sell at more than 10X the numbers but, so far, increasing sales numbers are proving them right.

Ą°If you build it, they will come.Ąą

Ok, a slight misquote from Ą°Field of DreamsĄą but it captures the faith still held by a few stalwarts in the compact/mid-size truck segment.

Ford and Dodge threw in the towel on smaller trucks, dropping the Ranger and Dakota lineups, arguing that customers have enough choices to reap the benefits of full-size utility, moderate pricing and modern fuel efficiency from within their wide selection of regular pickups.

But NissanĄŻs Frontier and ToyotaĄŻs Tacoma, both slated for coming updates, are hanging in while GM took the leap on faith last year with the release of the renewed Colorado/Canyon combo.

2015 gmc canyon details

Tested here we have the 2015 GMC Canyon, emphasizing bling as well as brawn, with standard alloy wheels and extensive chrome brightwork on the big GMC grille, as opposed to the more muscular, body-coloured Camaro-like cues of its Chevy Silverado sibling.

Under that shiny skin, the Canyon offers a choice of two engines ¨C a base 200 hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder or an optional 305 hp 3.6-litre V6. A six-speed manual tranny comes standard in entry-level models but the bulk of the lineup translates power via a six-speed automatic with TowHaul and auto grade braking.

The lineup also starts with 2WD (rear-wheel-drive) models but GM boasts that the Canyon is the only truck in the segment to offer an AutoTrac automatic 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system.

There are four modes to choose from ¨C 2WD, Auto, 4WD HI or 4WD LO. In the set-and-forget Auto mode, the electronically controlled, two-speed transfer case operates in 2WD until sensors detect a loss of traction and direct power to the front wheels.

2015 gmc canyon side view

There are two cab versions ¨C Extended Cab and Crew Cab ¨C and two pickup box sizes depending on model selection ¨C a regular 1,880 mm (6ĄŻ2Ąą) box and a short box option at 1568 mm (5ĄŻ2Ąą).

Putting numbers to those choices is hard because price differences vary with trim selections, but adding 4WD will bump up the price anywhere from $4,250 to $5,200, opting for Crew Cab can add from $2,850 to $4,150, and downsizing to a short box instead of the regular box (only in Crew Cab upper trim levels) can save you from $350 to $1,950.

Filling out the last of the many Canyon configuration choices, four trim levels include a special SL version ($20,600) limited to the four-cylinder engine and 2WD, moving up through the base Canyon model to SLE and SLT versions with varying degrees of standard and available equipment levels depending customer wishes and wallet depth.

Tested here, we have a Canyon SLE 4WD Extended Cab model ($33,350) with the regular length box. Maybe not quite at the leather-clad SLT level, but this truck sits pretty high up the Canyon food chain, complete with air conditioning, four-way power driverĄŻs chair, power group, rear vision camera, tilt/telescopic steering with audio, cruise and communication controls, overhead console, rear defogger, three USB sockets, auto-dimming mirror, remote keyless entry, an eight-inch Colour Touch radio with GMC IntelliLink and six-speaker audio, to mention just a few of the standard issue items.

An All-Terrain package ($1,750) boosts both attitude and ability with an off-road tuned suspension, 17-inch Dark Argent Metallic alloy wheels mounting P255/65R-17 all-terrain tires, body coloured trim, front tow hooks, Hill Descent Control, a transfer case shield and sporty Jet Black/Cobalt Red Cloth heated seats. It also adds a four-way power passenger seat to match the power driverĄŻs seat.

And, last but not least, our tester was powered by the optional 3.6-litre direct injected DOHC VVT V6 engine ($1,050) making 305 hp at 6,800 rpm and 269 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. With segment leading oomph, this V6 pumps out payload hauling power and up to a 3,175 kg (7,000 lb) tow rating. Fuel economy is rated at 13.5/9.8L/100km (city/hwy) with my real world results coming in at 12.9L/100km (comb).

This is a pickup truck after all, so letĄŻs at least mention the 1,880 mm (6ĄŻ2Ąą) box that comes with included segment-first CornerStep rear bumpers, an EZ Lift-and-Lower locking removable tailgate that allows one-handed operation and numerous tie-down locations. Our testerĄŻs box was pretty bare bones but a long list of options and accessories include a factory spray-in bedliner, bed mats, a toolbox, tonneau cover and a variety of GearOn packages that use bars, dividers or racks and cross rails to maximize payload versatility.

2015 gmc canyon box

Inside, the GMC Canyon is surprisingly sophisticated, well finished, roomy and comfortable, at least in the front row.

The Extended Cab layout offers a small space second row, too claustrophobic really for actual human habitation and more likely a dumping ground for bags, briefcases, whatever. I would opt for a Crew Cab for any serious second row passenger needs.

But there has to be some compromise in offering a smaller truck, after all, and the whole idea behind the Canyon was to pack modern sophistication and real truck utility into a more urban-friendly package with a smaller footprint.

With its variety of configurative choices, the GMC Canyon, designed as sort of a Ą°crossover interceptorĄą, can fulfill the needs of any customer looking to blend passenger civility and modern amenities with very real trucking payload potential.
