Ą°Hey, Is That A Ford Bike?

PALO ALTO, CA- Ford recently hosted automotive journalists from around the world at their new Silicon Valley research facility in Southern California.

Under the banner of the Ą°Ford Smart Mobility PlanĄą, the staff at the Research & Innovation Centre (RIC) instigated 25 global experiments designed to hone in on future technology transportation solutions.

On June 23, six months after the opening, Mark Fields, president and CEO of Ford announced that the company would shift into the next phase of the plan, moving from research to implementation, with new pilot programs to improve connectivity, data collection, driver information and mobility technologies as the industry evolves inevitably towards a future with more semi-autonomous and, eventually, fully-autonomous vehicles. Some of the announced projects include dynamic shuttle systems, peer-to-peer car sharing and flexible ownership programs that are being explored in the U.S. and Europe.

Among the many new plans and technologies, my top five take-aways from the demonstrations are:

Ą°Hey, is that a Ford bike?Ąą

In an increasingly congested, urban-concentrated world, Ford has recognized that getting to work sometimes requires more than just one mode of transportation, using instead a multi-modal mix, combining the car commute with trains, buses, subways and, yes, with a new experimental Ford e-bike.

Three electric-assist designs adopted from an in-house engineering competition are moving further in development, including the MoDe:Me personal bike, the MoDe:Pro commercial delivery bike and the MoDe:Flex enthusiastĄŻs bike.

The e-bikes can be folded and/or dismantled and electrically charged while stored in Ford vehicles. Ranges and charging times are being finalized but an add-on MoDe:Link smartphone app would include route planning, traffic monitoring, parking and transit links, along with eye-free navigation, vibrating the left or right handgrip to indicate direction.

A smartphone app, like the MyFord wearable apps being developed to work in conjunction with plug-in hybrids, will eventually also be available for smart watches and Android Wear.

Ą°Back, back, whoa.Ąą

Ford demonstrated the Pro Trailer Backup Assist debuting on the 2016 F-150 pickup truck. Turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction to where you want the trailer to go seems counterintuitive for some, especially for novice drivers.

Using the backup camera for dynamic hitch location has made life easier, but now, with the Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the driver simply uses his mirrors and backup camera to steer the trailer, not the truck, by simply turning a knob on the dashboard.

Even experienced drivers will marvel at absolutely straight backup lines with the control knob centred, and the new technology makes reversing quicker and easier for all.

Ą°ThereĄŻs a parking spot over there!Ąą

Backing up a trailer isnĄŻt the only challenge. Some drivers dread parallel parking as much as they did on the day of their driverĄŻs test.

Utilizing 12 ultrasonic sensors, FordĄŻs Enhanced Park Assist not only takes over the steering and assists with parallel parking, it also now works with perpendicular parking, like say, fitting into a gap in an underground parking lot.

Ford even had us test a new remote parking system that enables a driver to move the car with buttons on a key fob while standing outside the vehicle, handy to get your car in out of particularly tight spots when someoneĄŻs parked too close to you.

Ą°Eek! A spider!Ąą

An inadvertently humourous Ford survey found that, along with the challenges of backing up and parallel parking, younger drivers actually fear other drivers more than death, public speaking and, yes, even spiders.

Which is why a new generation of customers is opting for compulsory safety technologies like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, park assist systems, lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. Pre-collision assist and pedestrian detection, already available in Europe will be coming to the U.S. and Canada by 2019.

Think about the evolution of all those technologies and you can see how they will eventually blend into fully autonomous vehicle operation without any driver input, a concept which, by the way, doesnĄŻt bother Millennials and Generation Z members as much as it does Boomers and older drivers.

Ą°Say ĄŽcheeseĄą

The driver-assist technologies listed above are based on ultrasonic detection, radar-based systems and, more than ever, on cameras. Rearview cameras are becoming the norm but Ford is expanding into split-view front and rear cameras, 360-degree monitoring and a variety of other visual and sensing applications.

The coming 2016 Ford Super Duty will feature up to seven cameras on board and, by 2018, rear cameras will be standard on all Ford vehicles.

Ford is also experimenting with hydrophobic lenses that will shun dirt and water. And other potential camera applications include (cue the creepy music) monitoring driver behaviour, to tie in with lane keeping for drowsy driver alerts.

Ą°ThatĄŻs a wrap.Ąą

The above are only a few of the systems and technologies being explored by engineers across the company and by Ford staff at the Silicon Valley Research & Innovation Centre. Some of the other displays on hand included FordĄŻs new third-generation Sync 3 infotainment/communication system with a corresponding AppLink for your smartphone, the increasing use of organics instead of petroleum-based components, a new, faster Carbon3D parts manufacturing process, and new lightweight components that, in one example, cut the weight of an experimental Ford Fusion by 800 lb or 25 percent, achieving the same curb weight as a two-sizes-smaller Fiesta.

ThatĄŻs a broad range of research and new technologies that recognizes the changing times and needs of modern mobility and transportation.

Because When YouĄŻre Least Expecting It

The greatest joy in our life was born on the first day of 2014, seventeen hours after we got home from New YearĄŻs Eve festivities, and five hours after the Leafs beat the Red Wings in the Winter Classic ¨C contractions were six minutes apart at the start of the game and four minutes apart by the end, so my wife concentrated on her breathing and had her eyes shut for most of the shootout. All in all, it was a very good day and within 3 hours of the birth, we all hopped in the car to head home.

Since then we have spent lots of time in the car and itĄŻs grand. Except for just a few slightly inconvenient things. We drive a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon. Despite being a wagon, itĄŻs small and ideal for our downtown permit parking. Its smallness however, does account for one inconvenience ¨C car seats in small cars make adults in the passenger seat eat glass.

The baby seatĄŻs size, on its strapped-on base, limits the passenger seatĄŻs forward-backward-slide adjustment capabilities by about half, sitting it further ahead than most would comfortably position it, even if theyĄŻre small. Because sheĄŻs smaller than me and very nice, itĄŻs usually my wife who sits on the dashboard when weĄŻre in the car and because it would take a contortionist for her to reach, itĄŻs my job to pat the tiny head behind her for extra soothing, when necessary.

Poops are an interesting one for the car and there are a number of signs that may indicate a new presence. It might be the silence in the slightly contorted red face I sometimes see through the connection of the rear-view mirror and back seat headrest monkey-mirror. Sometimes itĄŻs the sound ¨C somewhere between the end of a squeeze ketchup bottle and a minor explosion. And then sometimes itĄŻs simply that smack, right in the face, mid-inhale. This is also known as the hotbox ¨C cracking the window a smidge is appropriate at this time. And you might also sometimes find yourself having to drive with the full force of highway wind in your face.

WeĄŻve changed diapers on the roadside, in the back of the wagon, and in cold weather on each otherĄŻs laps ¨C though depending on babyĄŻs mood combined with said presenceĄŻs consistency, one must remain vigilant, ninja-like, and expeditious so as to avoid further unpleasantness and/or trips to the shop for an interior clean.

At least with poops you can smell them. With any standard spit up, there is no warning. TheyĄŻre silent, odorless, tasteless (well, probably not tasteless), and they sneak up on you like a warm caterpillar of goo on your arm. Spit ups are rare in the car because they usually occur immediately after a feed-and-burp session before putting your foot back on the gas. However rare, the automobile pilot should stay alert to avoid the baby barf, the cute curdle, the lactic lunch ¨C itĄŻs still a thing to look out for. Because when youĄŻre least expecting it, you go to grab the little bundle out of the car seat and you touch something wet and squirmy. ĄŽCloth. I need a cloth.ĄŻ

And then, some babies just get sad. Though our baby sleeps most of the time weĄŻre in the car, I know of others who only scream. Plus, that does not make our car immune to the blood-curdling cries and vein-popping surges of desperation from the back seat. As very new parents, this would get us sweaty on the highway but weĄŻve since learned from our daughter that a combination of head rubbing (me) and singing (wife) calms her down right away.

Driving with the baby has been an overwhelmingly good experience here. My wife and I enjoy long drives and it seems our little one is following suit. Usually when I look she either is asleep or staring out the window at the passing scenery, clutching her bear, and pointing at stuff she likes ¨C beautiful. And then smack! Right in the face.

How Do The Brakes Feel?

Before you visit Dealerships itĄŻs a good idea to prioritize which features are most important to make sure the vehicle youĄŻre offered to test drive is properly equipped. For example, if youĄŻre in the market for a mini-van and need to have access to the second and third rows, youĄŻll want to test out the seats to see how easily they flip, fold and slide for easy exit and entry for passengers. Alternatively, if itĄŻs configurable storage space you need, check to see if the seats can be easily removed or folded into the floor to create extra storage space.

Tip: The 2015 Toyota Sienna comes equipped with an available 2nd row centre seat that increases the capacity from 7 to 8 passengers. It also has a power folding 3rd row seat that tucks away under the floor to allow for more cargo space; a few convenience features worthy of consideration for mini-van enthusiasts.

WeĄŻve separated the main categories of vehicle features into 6 groups to help you rate them in order of importance and personal preference.

How important is the vehicleĄŻs outer and inner appearance to you? Do you care what colour it is or how your friends and family will react to it when you take it over to show them after youĄŻve bought it? Are you looking to impress with style, design and brand name or is safety, comfort and performance more important than how it looks?

Tip: What your car colour says about you

How does it handle on a city street in stop and go traffic, the highway or going around a corner? When you get on the highway does the engine have enough torque to help you merge into speeding traffic easily? How does the steering feel when you round the corner? Does the suspension have some give or are rough roads and speed bumps going to make you hit your head on the ceiling? How high do the rpmĄŻs rev when going up a steep hill? How do the brakes feel?

Tip: If you use a truck for work hauling payloads or trailers you may want to check out the all new 2016 Nissan Titan which will debut later in 2015. It boasts a bigger frame, more towing and payload capacity as well as a new, heavier duty suspension to improve ride and handling.

There are a few components to a vehicleĄŻs safety story youĄŻll want to consider before, during and after the test drive.

Before: You can check the vehicleĄŻs crash test ratings and performance (crash worthiness) with the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Additionally, Consumer Reports offer an advanced safety system index by vehicle brand which includes features like back-up cameras, forward collision warnings, blind spot and lane departure warning systems.

During: Have the salesperson point out the location and quantity of standard versus optional airbags. Aside from the dual front airbag systems (standard equipment on all vehicles) some brands include additional airbags and some do not. The 2015 Kia Soul adds dual front seat mounted airbags and full-length side curtain airbags as standard equipment, which will protect the driver and passengerĄŻs torso and head in case of a side collision.

After: Think about how your visibility was while you drove the vehicle. Were you able to adjust the rear view and side view mirrors to gain a comfortable level of visibility around the car? How was the blind spot? Did the windows provide for enough visibility? Could you easily reach the gas and brake pedals? Did the car feel solid when you drove it?

Generally speaking, performance translates to power and youĄŻll want your new vehicle to be able to live up to what youĄŻre going to ask it to do during the time youĄŻll own it. The new truck youĄŻre dreaming about may look awesome but does it have adequate horsepower and torque to pull your toys? Buying an underpowered vehicle for your needs can cost you more in wear, tear and fuel consumption in the long run than investing in a bigger engine with more power up front. I made the mistake of purchasing an AWD SUV with a small 4-cylinder engine a few years ago. The power to weight ratio wasnĄŻt appropriate for the amount of driving I was doing and the engine needed frequent trips to the service department for repairs by year 3 and 140,000km on the odometer.

How do you measure quality? Is it the thickness of the padding in the seats, the materials used to trim the door and dash, the amount of plastic vs. leather, the touch of a knob, switch, lever or handle? How does the door sound when you close it? Is there wind noise sneaking through the gaps while youĄŻre on the highway? How are the wiper blades ¨C do they look durable or like theyĄŻll wear out after a few rain storms? Check under the hood for the type of strut it has: refilling your wiper fluid is easy with a gas strut but can be a pain with a manual rod. The same can be said for the trunk hinges: Are they mounted outside of the trunk leaving the entire space for cargo or does the elbow brackets come down into the trunk where they might crush your eggs and reduce space?

While you sit in the driverĄŻs seat take note of whatĄŻs around you and how easy it is to reach and operate your favourite features. Is the interior intuitive? How does the seat feel? Is there a centre armrest with storage? Will the cup holders adequately hold your morning extra large double-double? Can you adjust the height of the seat belt so it rests comfortably across your torso and not across your neck? Can you reach the knobs and dials on the HVAC and infotainment systems? Is there an automatic trunk release feature available from the key fob? An extra power outlet in the back seat for passengers? Does the steering wheel tilt or adjust to accommodate your body type? Is your phone compatible with the onboard electronics system?

Test drives give car buyers an opportunity to try before they buy, so take your time, ask lots of questions, try out everything and imagine it in your life for the next several years. Do you love it? Can you see it in your life at the cottage, at the cabin, going to and from work and going to hockey practice? If you can picture it integrated into your lifestyle and feel excited at the thought of where you and your new horse on wheels will take you, itĄŻs time to negotiate price and take it home.

2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Revealed

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2016 Jetta GLI, the sedan equivalent of the Golf GTI.

Equipped with a specially tuned sport suspension and 210 hp, 2.0-liter, TSI turbocharged and direct-injection EA888 four-cylinder engine, the GLI offers a compelling blend of value, performance and practicality.

For 2016, the GLI gets a bold new look highlighted by an aggressive front fascia that incorporates a honeycomb grille and foglights, along with a new rear bumper design that has a diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts.

All 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI models have 18-inch Mallory design aluminum-alloy wheels, shod with standard all-season tires or optional summer performance tires.

Inside, 2016 GLI models benefit from the new MIB 2 infotainment system that incorporates the full suite of USB and Car-Net connectivity.

A Direct-type Fuel-injection System

The rear-wheel-drive BRZ is an authentic sports coupe that carves its own path with its light vehicle weight, ultra-low centre of gravity and precision steering, delivering pinpoint handling accuracy and an unmatched level of driving pleasure for sports car enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Utilizing SubaruĄŻs naturally aspirated, horizontally opposed Ą°boxerĄą engine design, the BRZ is capable of achieving up to 7.0L/100 km highway fuel economy (with six-speed automatic transmission).

In light- and medium-load conditions, the port fuel injectors help produce precise combustion, increasing performance and efficiency.

Driving enthusiasts can choose between a six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic transmission in the 2016 Subaru BRZ and BRZ Sport-tech Package. Both transmissions have been engineered and tuned to maximize performance and sporty driving feel.

Pricing starts at $27,395 for the base model with manual transmission and $28,595 for the automatic. The Sport-tech Package manual is $29,395 and the Sport-tech automatic is $30,595.

Like all Subaru models, the 2016 Subaru BRZ has achieved a U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2015 Top Safety Pick.

Rearview Camera Is An Option

WhatĄŻs best: The supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with its 354 hp powers the SQ5 to a 0-100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

WhatĄŻs worst: Rearview camera is an option. Hard to believe when itĄŻs standard on many much less expensive vehicles.

WhatĄŻs interesting: The Q5/SQ5 has a choice of powertrains to fit any lifestyle. But for those who value performance, the 354 hp SQ5 is the answer.

The performance variant of AudiĄŻs popular Q5 crossover SUV, the SQ5 has a lot to offer buyers in the entry-luxury market.

The SQ5 is designed especially for those who want a little more pop than the normal Q5, thanks to the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that produces 354 hp and 346 lb/ft of torque.

This marks the first application of the ĄŽSĄŻ designation on one of AudiĄŻs sport utes. Previously the ĄŽSĄŻ has been reserved strictly for AudiĄŻs car lines.

While you canĄŻt be all things to all people, Audi has attempted to do that in the Q5/SQ5 line with several engine options.

The Q5 Komfort comes with a 220 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, while the Progressiv and Technik trim levels also offer a 240 hp 3.0-litre turbo diesel with 428 lb/ft of grunt as well as a 272 hp 3.0-litre TFSI and a 2.0-litre TFSI hybrid.

Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission with paddle shifters are standard across the board.

What makes the Q5/SQ5 a popular line for Audi is that the vehicles have the characteristics of a sedan along with five-passenger seating and the versatility of an SUV.

We recently had a chance to test the 2015 SQ5 and found that it had many good things going for it. On the performance side, the SQ5 is impressive with great acceleration, good braking and stable handling. Audi lists a 0-100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

Natural Resources CanadaĄŻs fuel consumption ratings are 14.1/9.9/12.2 L/100 km city/highway/combined.

With its sport-tuned suspension, the SQ5 can carve tight corners with ease and at the same time offer a comfortable ride as we found even on our pothole-littered roads after a harsh winter in a vehicle clad with huge 21-inch wheels.

The Q5/SQ5 offers a feeling of stability with its quattro permanent all-wheel drive getting exactly the right amount of power to each wheel as required.

In normal driving, 60 per cent of the power is routed to the rear wheels. However, if the wheels of one axle lose grip, drive torque is immediately directed to the other axle to stabilize the vehicle.

On the outside, Audi describes the SQ5 as Ą°sharp without being showyĄą and Ą°sporty without being impractical.Ąą

I find the exterior styling a little uninspiring, but there are a few distinguishing hints, largely in badging, that indicate the SQ5 is something special.

Inside, however, the cabin is wonderfully finished in a simple yet classy way ĄŞ certainly an Audi strong point. The flat bottom steering wheel, sport seats, badges and other touches help set the SQ5 apart from the base models.

While the 2015 Q5 starts at $42,600 in Canada, think of the SQ5 as the top of the food chain in the Q5 lineup.

Our tester had the top-level Technik trim, which adds Homelink, Audi side assist, adaptive front headlights and heated rear seats to the standard Progressiv trim features.

The test vehicle also had a number of options including a navigation package ($2,800), Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System ($1,000), 21-inch five-spoke design wheels ($1,000) and other features that took the as-tested price to $66,890. Add $2,095 for freight and PDI.

Among the standard features on the SQ5 are advance key with push button start, power tailgate, LED taillights, Audi drive select, panoramic power glass sunroof, SIRIUS satellite radio, heated front seats, S sport suspension, rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control, 10-speaker premium sound system, interior LED lighting package, 60/40 split folding rear seats, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, Bluetooth, heated power adjustable auto-dimming side mirrors and headlight washers.

While the SQ5 is a compact offering, legroom front and rear is quite good. The front sport seats are supportive and comfortable with lots of adjustments and the rear seats slide fore and aft and recline.

With all seats in their upright position, there is 824 litres of cargo space, 1,622 litres with the rear seats folded.

On the safety front, the Q5/SQ5 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick +, its highest rating thanks to front crash prevention technology.

Perhaps because of the extensive powertrain lineup, the Q5/SQ5 is a sales leader in the competitive compact luxury crossover category where it is pitted against a host of other luxury sport crossovers like the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Lexus RX 350 F-Sport and even its stablemate, the Porsche Macan.

So for those who value performance in a premium compact crossover the SQ5 is hard to beat.
