A Couple With An Infant Can?

When I was asked to take the 2016 Mazda CX-3 for a spin, I found myself surprisingly excited considering that this type of a carĄŞsmall/compact crossoverĄŞisnĄŻt usually my cup of tea; as a certified auto journalist, and thus, somewhat unbalanced, IĄŻm a big station wagon and hatchback kind of guy. IĄŻve always felt they provided all the creature comforts of an SUV or CUV, while still providing an engaging ride.

However, the CX-3 is a Mazda, and Mazda has to be respected for always finding a way to add that certain je ne sais quoi that makes a car fun to drive and behold, whether that has to do with some funky styling, a firm chassis or engaging powertrain. ThatĄŻs what happens when youĄŻre known for continually building one of the worldĄŻs most exciting, fun-to-drive and above all, affordable, sports cars on the market: the MX-5.

Styling

So, with that in mind, I sauntered up to our CX-3 tester, finished in brilliant Soul Red metallic paint, and took it in.

The first thing that jumped to mind is just how proportional it all is. I would say that the slim front fascia, the short overhangs and slightly canted-forward stance are much more reminiscent of the MX-5 than they are with, say, the Mazda3, which is a good thing. ItĄŻs not that the 3 looks bad, itĄŻs just that the MX-5 looks better. Those headlight lenses are especially menacing, and are so narrow youĄŻre surprised they work at all. They do, and are quite powerful in LED form, which my?tester had as they come standard on the top-spec GT trim.

In profile, while the little roof spoiler falls towards the Ą°cutesyĄą side, the plastic cladding ĄŽround the wheel wells and rocker panels (for hardcore off-roading, you know) are just butch enough to let folks know that the CX-3 is more than simply a Mazda2 hatchĄŞwith which it shares a platformĄŞon steroids. ItĄŻs eye catching, most definitely in a good way. Same goes for the sharp-looking 17-inch two-tone wheels. IĄŻd have these on an aftermarket conversion, thatĄŻs for sure.

Styling?

Women want to look good behind the wheel, and we want the car we drive to excite us every time we see it. If we donĄŻt like how it looks, taking it for a test drive is usually out of the question. There is no doubt that this sporty looking subcompact crossover turns heads of both men and women. I describe it as a perfect balance of aggressive and cute wrapped up in one great little package.

MazdaĄŻs ĄŽKodoĄŻ design is powerful and sharp looking. Assertive headlights and a wide, forward stance make it look like itĄŻs ready to pounce at any moment. I agree with Dan.?? Fluid lines bring it all together and looking at it from the side you can definitely describe it as ĄŽcutesyĄŻ.

The good looks continue on the inside. Nothing in this segment comes close. The sweeping dash is well laid out and easy on the eyes. Splashes of color, large dials and plenty of soft touch points make this vehicle appear to cost more than it really does.

Interior space, styling and ergonomics

The first thing that catches your eye, of course, is the white leather that covers the seats and parts of the dash; itĄŻs some pretty blinding stuff, and IĄŻd probably avoid it because a) it looks way too pretty for my liking and more importantly, b) white leather scuffs, it absorbs dye from your wet jeans and itĄŻs blindingly reflective in direct sunlight.

What IĄŻm a big fan of, however, is the Lux Suede inserts on the seats, which are comfortable and supportive; I definitely wasnĄŻt expecting quality chairs like this in a micro-CUV. ItĄŻs great as it tends to not get so hot in the summer or cold in the winter, and it grips your hiney when the goings get twistier. I also like the red and black leather inserts; in fact, IĄŻd like to see more of both colours, the red in particular.

What IĄŻd also like to see more ofĄŞand which may be a tougher ask, unfortunatelyĄŞis room. ItĄŻs OK up front; the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and the six-way manually adjustable driverĄŻs seat allows for 954 millimetres of front headroom and 1,058 mm of legroom, but itĄŻs mighty tight in the back. If I were to sit behind the driverĄŻs seat adjusted for my 6ĄŻ3Ąą frame, well, letĄŻs just say it wouldnĄŻt be my first choice of transportation, and though Mazda claims it seats five, thatĄŻs really, really pushing it. ItĄŻs very snug, to the point where I wouldnĄŻt recommend putting much more than a baby seat back there. Or, fold the seats down flat, making room for 1,484 Litres of cargo space, and 1,528L if you donĄŻt have the premium audio system whose subwoofer takes up room back there. Plenty of room to fit a set of golf clubs or an adult-sized hockey bag. Unlike the CX-3ĄŻs CX-5 big brother, however, you donĄŻt get the 40/20/40 split folding rear seats, meaning you have to make do with a more traditional 60/40 set-up.

Interior space, styling and ergonomics

I keep most of my personal belongs in my purse and toss that on an empty seat; keeping my cell phone and coffee cup close by. Lack of space is usually an issue in smaller cars and the CX-3 is no different. The cup holders are too close to my elbow and the rubberized pad for a phone wonĄŻt fit anything larger than the iPhone 6.

I am smaller than Dan and found the front seat to be acceptable. The back seat however is another story. Adults will not be comfortable in the back seat, headroom is ok but legroom is extremely limited. A single or couple needing to run errands will find the trunk big enough for a few groceries bags but not room for much of anything else.

Performance, ride and handling

If youĄŻre planning on spending most of your time behind the wheel, howeverĄŞas I wouldĄŞthen thereĄŻs a lot to like about the CX-3. While the power figures wonĄŻt necessarily blow your socks off, the 146 horsepower and 146 lb.-ft. of torque, what?it does provide is more than enough to have the lilĄŻ CX-3 zipping along at a good speed. The only available transmission is a six-speed automatic (whether you select an AWD or FWD model), so that makes the buying process that much easier.

So while it may not kick your butt too hard on the drag strip, itĄŻs still a fun car to thread through the urban jungle, where it demonstrated precise steering and fairly flat cornering, the latter feature making for much more comfortable long-distance drives.

Adding to the comfort is the surprisingly supple suspension; indeed, the sporty hatch guy in meĄŞand heĄŻs a big guyĄŞwouldĄŻve liked a slightly firmer set-up, but in the end, this hereĄŻs a vehicle that has to appeal to a much broader buyer base.

Performance, ride and handling

The one thing that keeps popping into my mind to describe the ride feel of the CX-3 is spirited. It is super easy to dash in and out of city traffic or take a corner in a?suburban neighbourhood.

On the winding highway roads going to Whistler for the weekend I was actually taken by surprise. This little SUV feels grounded and capable on every bend. Road and engine noise was to a minimum; something that Mazda has really improved on their vehicles over the last couple years.

Unlike Dan, I loved the supple suspension.

The only transmission available is a very quick shifting and smooth 6-speed automatic. I was having so much fun on my drive not once did I wish I had a manual.

Safety and technology

All CX-3 trims get the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which provides a 7-inch colour touchscreen and something called an HMI controller, mounted on the centre console, to help navigate all the menus. When I first experienced a system of this type on a BMW, I was less than impressed; however, as weĄŻre seeing more of a switch to an all-touch set-up in the industry, IĄŻm glad to have an actual knob to turn. I find it easier to work with, as I donĄŻt like having to reach over to a touchscreen in order to change audio tracks or sources.

Once you do finally settle on an audio source, rest assured that the seven-speaker Bose sound system (a six-speaker unit is standard) will please your eardrums.

My?testerĄŻs Tech Package also provides a whole suite of electronic driving aids, including auto braking (brakes are applied automatically if the car senses the driver is too slow to react in a panic-stop situation), lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which can sense approaching cars as the driver backs out of a parking space.

Safety and technology

This AWD system is not going to be capable of off-roading. In my opinion, proper driving techniques matched with winter tires is more than adequate for Canadian winters.

That being said, knowing my vehicle has AWD gives me a feeling of security. I feel more confident behind the wheel. Some Canadians will agree with me and find that the additional $2000 for the optional AWD will be worth it.

If you are really looking for a sense of security and safety, the top of the line GT, priced at $31,020 comes standard with AWD and you can add on the ĄŽTechnology PackageĄŻ for $1500. The tech package should really be called the safety package; it gives you blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and the High Beam Control system.

The base model comes equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, push button start and rear view camera. The one feature I wouldnĄŻt want to live with out is heated seats and they come standard on the next trim level up, the GS. The GS also has a power moonroof and Leather wrapped steering wheel, parking brake and shift knob. Not needed, but they are features that really enhance my drive enjoyment. For a starting price of $26,220 this would be what I would spend my money on.

In the endĄ­

I really like the CX-3; I think it looks great, itĄŻs an able performerĄŞespecially in the ride and handling departmentsĄŞthe interior is well-appointed and has the style to match the exterior. So thereĄŻs lots to like about it, as long as youĄŻre willing to put up with the tight confines of the interior, especially in the back seat. ItĄŻs so snug back there, itĄŻs almost a surprise MazdaĄŻs provided two rear doors.

Indeed, youĄŻll find more room in the Mazda3, but with that car, you wonĄŻt quite find the cachet you get with the CX-3.

LetĄŻs see if Lacey agrees.

This spirited little crossover is top of my list in this growing segment. The Nissan Juke would be a close second. And itĄŻs sporty handling that has me leaning more towards the CX-3. This vehicle would be a wonderful first vehicle for a couple or single that maybe has a dog and are thinking of starting a family one-day. A couple with an infant can?get into this vehicle very easily and upgrade into a large member of the Mazda line-up as they grow their family.

IĄŻve always liked wagons.

Not the graceless behemoths from decades past, but todayĄŻs modern interpretation.

IĄŻm talking about Audi A4 allroad, BMW 3 Series Touring, Mercedes E-Class Wagon, and the like.

These handle like their sport sedan siblings, but can haul big-screen TVs, a couple of bikes or even a load of camping gear.

IĄŻll concede theyĄŻre somewhat less cavernous than their predecessors, but are a more elegant solution than the lumbering Roadmasters and hulking, faux wood-panelled Country Squires that were eventually replaced by the minivan, and the SUVs and crossovers that soon followed.

All were ¨C and still are ¨C more vehicle than many families really need.

Ą°Oh, but my kids are in hockeyĄ­Ąą

Somehow my generation ¨C and our larger broods ¨C survived the trek to the arena without a barge-sized cargo carrier.

Leading to my point that todayĄŻs wagon ¨C in particular, the sport wagon ¨C is the perfect ride for those needing a little space, but who still love to drive.

One of my top picks last year was the Volvo V60. More precisely the V60 Polestar, which is a high-performance version of VolvoĄŻs mid-size wagon.

But one doesnĄŻt need such track-ready capability to reap most of the rewards.

The V60 is a premium product that starts just a tick over $40K, with both FWD and AWD models powered by a choice of engines that include a 240 hp turbo four-cylinder, 250 hp turbo five-cylinder, 300 hp turbocharged inline six, and an R-Design version of the latter pushing out 325 horses and hitting the wallet at $51,700.

All that, plus superb fit and finish, good material choices and some of the best seating in its segment. And put together with the bank-vault-like build quality synonymous with this Swedish automaker.

My recent tester was the V60ĄŻs AWD Cross Country sibling, which narrows engine options to VolvoĄŻs turbocharged 2.5-litre inline five (T5) that produces 250 hp and 266 lb/ft of torque. ItĄŻs mated to a six-speed automatic with Geartronic sequential shift.

Aside from powertrains, the most noticeable difference between the Cross Country and regular V60 is ride height. It sits up another 65 mm, with a SUV-like ground clearance of 201 mm or about eight inches. And guarding its underbelly are front and rear skid plates in case you take it off the tarmac.

18-inch alloys are standard, as is hill descent control and rear park assist. Other upgrades are cosmetic, such as black fender extensions, honeycomb grille, exclusive window trim and mirror caps.

It looks a tad more aggressive than the V60, but both vehicles benefit from wide shoulders, a high beltline and rear-sloping roofline that give this wagon an athletic shape.

The back end is well put together with integrated dual exhausts, a prominent roof spoiler and vertical taillights that follow the contours of its beefy haunches.

Inside, the quarters are well appointed with ample soft touch, nice graining and brightwork, and seats upholstered in optional Ą°Beechwood SportĄą leather.

The centre stack is angled toward the driver, but is replete with buttons, looking a bit dated compared to some of todayĄŻs touchscreen infotainment systems.

I do, however, prefer hitting a single button rather than tapping my way through menus and submenus to achieve the desired result. For example, to quickly disable the auto start/stop feature that saves fuel, but annoys.

A base V60 Cross Country starts at $44,100 and comes standard with rear park assist, power moonroof, roof rails, dual-zone climate control, eight-way power/heated front seats (with memory for the driver), seven-inch colour display, eight-speaker audio and more.

My Platinum tester, which starts at $50,400, adds such items as keyless drive, rear park assist camera, leather seating, upgraded Harmon/Kardon audio, navigation and adaptive TFT instrument cluster.

Driver aids and premium amenities come in several reasonably priced option packages. I wonĄŻt list them here, but if you want all the nannies like adaptive cruise control, collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keeping aid, blind spot warning and more, be prepared to pay a little more.

Safety is where Volvo truly shines, and on that note, a company goal is Ą°that no one shall be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo by the year 2020.Ąą

V60, like most wagons, scores well on practicality, although its tapered cabin and sloped roofline ¨C which provides a more pleasing shape than it brick-like predecessors ¨C does cut into interior volume.

With the 40/20/40 second-row in place, cargo capacity is 430 litres. This expands to 1,241 litres when you drop them. ItĄŻs less than some compact SUVs and crossovers, but enough for most needs ¨C and quite functional with seats that truly fold flat ¨C not angled up like most.

And with a separately folding middle position, thereĄŻs no problem carrying two rear passengers when lugging long objects like skis or lumber.

Function aside, this family hauler is also fun to drive. Its turbocharged inline five pulls strongly, with peak torque starting at a low 1,800 rpm, meaning thereĄŻs minimal turbo lag. Zero to 100 km/h takes only 7.4 seconds.

Some journos have lamented that Volvo hasnĄŻt equipped its Cross Country with the new Drive-E turbo four that gets two more cogs in its Geartronic.

Indeed the older, odd-cylinder engine may be less fuel efficient, but I appreciate its punchy character, and its robust exhaust note when you plant the pedal.

And although the eight-speed is smoother, IĄŻm not averse to sensing a carĄŻs mechanicals when theyĄŻre doing the right things.

Drop the six-speed into ĄŽsportĄŻ mode and youĄŻll see what I mean. Not only do you get later shifts and a quicker throttle, but the ability to choose your own gears.

Bump the lever forward or back (there are no paddles), for rapid-fire shifts that some may consider abrupt. I, however, am tired of ĄŽmanumaticsĄŻ that lazily up- or downshift instead of snapping to attention when I pull the lever.

Well-done Volvo.

The V60 may not be your fatherĄŻs station wagon, nor his Volvo, but itĄŻs yet another example of how this automaker has reinvented itself.

Still safe and sensible, and maybe ¨C dare I say it ¨C just a little bit sexy.

2018 Cadillac SRX Luxury Collection Edition?

Craftsmanship helps define the overall quality of any luxury product.

Customers of the Lincoln MKX, for example, cite overall quality as their No. 1 purchase reason for the medium crossover.

This desire is seen beyond automotive as well.

A study by the Luxury Institute and Epsilon finds that 74 per cent of wealthy consumers believe that superior quality is the most important attribute of a luxury product, followed by superior craftsmanship.

The new Lincoln MKX, on sale this summer, elevates craftsmanship by subtly fusing form and function, sometimes in areas not immediately seen or felt by the customer.

Some Ą°hiddenĄą improvements to the 2016 Lincoln MKX include:

Foam was added to the wrapped console side panels, providing a softer area for the leg to rest, and also added to the door armrests and steering wheel.Extra strength was added to the dead-pedal area ¨C where a driver rests his/her left foot ¨C to make the area firmer.Scuff materials in the door and tailgate were upgraded to stainless steel, which is more resistant to scratches and helps maintain a beautiful appearance.

The 2016 Lincoln MKX offers available Bridge of Weir Deepsoft leather, created specifically for Lincoln seating surfaces.

Bridge of Weir Deepsoft leather goes through a 16-hour softening process, which is a considerably longer process than most automotive leathers. A hand-sewn and -stitched Wollsdorf leather-wrapped steering wheel is available on higher-series vehicles.

The center console was redesigned to improve functionality while elevating craftsmanship.

The armrest includes a two-button clamshell execution. This arrangement allows for one button to open only the flocked storage with the tray and the other to open the main bin, creating a versatile storage option.

To increase the crafted appearance, the gooseneck hinge arms that connect the armrest and clamshell tray to the hinge are hidden.

Reducing margins and eliminating sharp edges, cut lines, parting lines and visible fasteners ¨C while using genuine wood and metal ¨C drives fit and finish.
