OK, So WhatĄŻs The Catch?

WhatĄŻs Best: $10,000 price chop for new entry-level Coupe Enthusiast Edition.WhatĄŻs Worst: Sacrifices to be made for the price cut. Design is getting dated.WhatĄŻs Interesting: Sales have already bumped up due to the price cut but there are rumours of a future, lighter, smaller replacement that might simply be called the Z with, hopefully, an efficient powertrain lineup that starts with a turbo four-cylinder choice.

BODY STYLE: Two-door sport car/coupe.

The steering wheel felt alive under my fingers.

A stomp of the throttle prodded the engine with the snarl of instant gratification.

The handling was quick and crisp, the brakes authoritatively taming the speed bursts of this beast as we carved country road corners, pirouetted through esses, and shot through traffic gaps in the cut and thrust of urban driving.

Ahh, but thereĄŻs an inherent problem with this kind of performance.

Because the quicker the car is, the shorter my patience gets.

RELATED: Nissan reveals fan-sourced Project 370Z

The power and agility, the exuberance of noisy acceleration, that sense of can-do-anything ability tends to engender a hyperactive impatience when youĄŻre sharing the road with seemingly mere mortals who are slowly and uncertainly doddering about in minivans and cumbersome sport ute land barges, hesitating over lane changes, inexplicably braking for phantom reasons, and just generally not getting the hell out of your way.

I usually resort to deep breathing, maybe an Enya playlist, or the calming Spa channel. And I remind myself that I am usually a part of that same slow-moving herd.

But IĄŻm also reminded of just how much fun a Nissan Z can be.

And it takes some reminding because, 45 years since the first Z appeared, and with only minor changes over the last two generations, itĄŻs easy to take the Z for granted and not give it the attention it deserves.

But for the 2016 model year, Nissan has added a new Coupe Enthusiast Edition base model ($29,998) that drops the entry-level price by a whopping $10,000.

Now, thatĄŻs sure to make potential customers pay attention.

That kind of move goes against the grain for most car companies, where the steady evolution of bigger, more expensive models is a more usual trend.

Even NissanĄŻs sport car lineup of Zs have tended to get porkier and more fully loaded with each generation.

This new base model still harnesses NissanĄŻs award-winning 332 hp 3.7-litre DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. This powertrain combo is rated at 13.3/9.3L/100km (city/hwy) but if fuel economy is a big concern, youĄŻre shopping in the wrong aisle, bub. My real world averages worked out to 12L/100km (comb) even with occasional outbursts of adrenalized lunacy.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: Mazda MX-5 Receives Ą°Red Dot: Best of the BestĄą Award?

Our tester, dipped nicely in Gun Metallic paint, stands on handsome complementary black-finished 18-inch alloy wheels and comes standard with a sport tuned suspension, bi-functional Xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, black woven carbon seat cloth interior, Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Start, power windows, power locks, two 12V outlets, USB connection, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, automatic climate control and illuminated steering wheel controls.

OK, so whatĄŻs the catch? What are we giving up for the $10,000 price chop?

Well, while I wouldnĄŻt exactly label the Coupe Enthusiast Edition a Ą°stripperĄą, there are sacrifices to be made, namely:

No available automatic transmissionNo viscous limited-slip rear differentialManually-adjusted cloth seats instead of leatherNo heated/ventilated seat featureNo 7.0-inch VGA touch-sensitive LCD display screen (a cubby storage area in the same space instead)No VoiceLink recognitionNo RearView monitor or NavigationNo Homelink transceiverA 4-speaker audio system without satellite radio instead of the BOSE 6-speaker upgradeNo Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or Active Sound Enhancement (ASE)No auxiliary audio/video input jacksNo auto dimming rearview mirror or heated outside mirrorsNo aluminum pedals or cargo coverSimpler Ą°ZĄą side badging without LED illumination

But while I might also miss the 19-inch wheels and SychroRev Match throttle-blipping available in higher trim levels, thereĄŻs nothing on that list of deletions above that I canĄŻt live without for a $10,000 price cut.

Customers who need the extra do-dads can still opt for the Touring Coupe ($39,998), Touring Sport Coupe ($43,998), the NISMO (Nissan Motorsports) Coupe ($47,998) or the convertible lineup with the Touring Black Top ($49,498) Touring Sport Black Top ($53,498) or Touring Sport Bourdeaux Top model($54,998).

Nissan 370Z Coupe 2016 hatch

The one thing this pared-down Coupe Enthusiast Edition definitely does benefit from is a leaner and meaner mass reduction, courtesy of being stripped to its bare essentials. It weighs in at 1,497 kg, about 100 kg less than a fully loaded model, even 50 kg lighter than the lean NISMO (1,547 kg), giving it a very comparable power-to-weight ratio to the performance model.

And that new Ą°less is moreĄą philosophy may well be the new trend for a future revision that will allow Nissan to go head-to-head with class competitors like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, Mustang V6 and Mazda MX-5.

There are rumours of an all-new, downsized, lighter and more affordable Z model that will be designed to tap into the essential spirit of the original 240Z with styling and value aimed at a whole new generation of buyers.

Stay tuned.

IIHS Crashing Cars For SafetyĄŻs Sake?

OnStarĄŻs Injury Severity Prediction

OnStarĄŻs Injury Severity Prediction analyzes crash information like force of impact and direction of impact to determine the probability of severe injury to the vehicle occupants. OnStar advisors then relay the Injury Severity Prediction rating to 9-1-1 centers, which may choose to adjust the level and priority of response dispatched to a crash scene.

OnStarĄŻs Injury Severity Prediction service is accurately predicting the severity of crash victimsĄŻ injuries, allowing for improved on-scene treatment, according to findings of a recent study.

Injury Severity Prediction (ISP) is an algorithm that OnStar uses in properly equipped Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to provide additional information to first responders following a vehicle crash.

The algorithm analyzes crash information like force of impact and direction of impact to determine the probability of severe injury to the vehicle occupants.

OnStar Advisors then relay the Injury Severity Prediction rating to 9-1-1 centers, which may choose to adjust the level and priority of response dispatched to a crash scene.

RELATED: IIHS Crashing cars for safetyĄŻs sake?

Over the past four years, General Motors, OnStar and the University of MichiganĄŻs International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM), led by Dr. Stewart Wang, conducted research that illustrates how crash data can assist first responders.

This was the first known study to match real-life injury outcomes with crash telemetry data.

Now that the algorithm for predicting severe injuries has been validated, the next step is educating the emergency response community so it can adjust training and protocols.

Pilot programs will be held in early summer.

Taking input from the pilot sessions, the training will be adjusted and rolled out to all first responders in the fall.

OnStar Injury Severity Prediction is part of OnStarĄŻs Automatic Crash Response service, available as part of the OnStar Protection, Security and Guidance plans.

OnStar responds to more than 5,000 vehicle crashes every month.

In 1928, The Company Acquired CanadaĄŻs Dodge Bros

FCA Canada (formerly Chrysler Canada) marked its 90th anniversary June 17 at a special celebration on the banks of the Detroit River and steps from its Canadian headquarters.

Employees, senior executives, local media and other special guests attended the celebration.

Fittingly, the event was held at WindsorĄŻs Dieppe Gardens, the former location of the Dominion Typograph Company. There, in 1896, the Dodge brothers established their bicycle company, a precursor to FCAĄŻs modern-day Dodge vehicle brand.

The Chrysler Corporation of Canada Limited was incorporated in Windsor, Ontario, on June 17, 1925, only 11 days after Walter P. Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. Chrysler Corporation of Canada was the successor to the former Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company of Canada.

In 1928, the Company acquired CanadaĄŻs Dodge Bros. operations and truck manufacturer Graham Bros., while the Plymouth and DeSoto divisions were also established, making Chrysler Corp. a full-line Canadian auto manufacturer. A year later, it opened its first new assembly facility, the nucleus for the current Windsor Assembly Plant.

Today, FCA Canada is comprised of seven automotive brands: Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram Truck and Mopar.

It operates two vehicle-manufacturing facilities in Windsor (Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan) and Brampton, Ontario (Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger), plus a key casting plant in Etobicoke in TorontoĄŻs west end. Nationally, the Company has three Regional Business Centres, three Parts Distribution Centres and the unique Automotive Research and Development Centre (ARDC), also in Windsor.

But Where Was The Nearest Washroom?

Route: Highway 400 North ¨C Highway 69 ¨C Highway 17 WestDriving Distance: 8 hours, 726 kmFavourite Song: Ą°DustĄą, Eli Young BandQuote of the Day: Not all those who wander are lost. J.R.R. Tolkien

It was the end of summer 2014 and as I helped my post-secondary children get organized to move back to their university towns for the Fall Semester, I decided it was time for an adventure of my own. My adventure would serve two purposes: Keep my mind off the soon-to-be empty house and take some time to think about what to do with my life.

The next stage of life was coming fast and in less than a year my little birds who werenĄŻt so little anymore, were going to fly the nest for good. A road trip across Canada felt like the perfect opportunity to gather the courage to navigate my way through a major change in my life. If I could face the fear of camping and travelling alone surely I could adapt to living alone after 22 years of being a Mom.

The incentive for overcoming the risks of a solo road trip was the promise to knock a few items off my bucket list: Photograph the grain elevators of the Prairies, visit my FatherĄŻs birthplace in Saskatchewan, camp under the stars in Banff, whale watch in Campbell River and body surf in the Pacific Ocean from the beaches in Tofino, to name a few.

Join me over the next 20 weeks as I share some of the highways and bi-ways of the beautiful country we Canadians call home. IĄŻll also share photographs, personal anecdotes, inspirational quotes, and favourite songs so you can ride shotgun on an 11,000 kilometre cross Canada adventure on 4 wheels.

The morning of departure. My living room, Barrie, Ontario, September 3, 2014

It was sunny and warm on the day of my departure and I packed my new Chevrolet Cruze full of clothes and enough camping gear to last a month: A brand new portable burner for cooking (still in the box) along with half a dozen propane cylinders, a borrowed tent and tarp, bungee cords, tools, utensils, blankets, lawn chair, coolers full of food and water, and a canister full of bear spray. By the time I hit the highway in Barrie it was already 10am, so I didnĄŻt stop for a much needed extra large cup of coffee until I reached Parry Sound. From there I drove past Shawanaga First Nation, alongside the Magnetawan River and through the popular summer cottage area of Pointe au Baril while I marvelled at the beauty of my home Province. Ontario is so enormous it hosts 40% of CanadaĄŻs population and contains 2 separate time zones.

The next stop was French River Provincial Park (2 hours and 225km from Barrie), a beautiful rest spot with information about the historic trade route of First Nations and early Canadian trappers and fur traders. I decided to stretch my legs along the easy-to-access visitor trail and peeked over the cliffĄŻs edge at the breathtaking gorge below. It didnĄŻt take long to get sidetracked by the 3km trail marker for Recollet Falls. You know how some people have to stop at every museum or tourist attraction while on holiday? IĄŻm like that with hiking trails, and this one was worth the detour.

I was a bit behind schedule despite having an itinerary planned out to the nth degree, so it was along the banks of the French River that I decided not to allow the clock to dictate the next three weeks. No doubt there would be days to take detours and other days to haul donkey, so go with the flow became my new modus operandi.

The sign for the City of Greater Sudbury appeared an hour or so later and although the beautiful rugged landscape beckoned to be explored, I chose the by-pass route and drove through to Blind River instead. The North Channel of Lake Huron had the best view IĄŻd ever seen from a coffee shopĄŻs parking lot and as I leaned up against my car sipping on yet another extra large coffee, I began to feel the stress of working to deadlines and meeting endless responsibilities begin to evaporate.

After a relatively uneventful leg of Highway 17 West between Sudbury and downtown Sault Ste. Marie at rush-hour, the splendour of Algoma Country began to rise from the horizon in the form of canyons, rugged cliffs and an emerging view of two of CanadaĄŻs Great Lakes. I was headed towards my first overnight stop at Agawa Bay Campground in Lake Superior Provincial Park, and although I didnĄŻt have a reservation I was hoping to arrive early enough to snag a beachfront campsite.

RELATED:?Top 10 Road Trip Destinations on a Cross Canada Adventure

By the time I arrived at the campground (726km later) the park office was closed, I missed getting access to bundled firewood and the sun was setting. Not to be deterred, I drove around the campground to hunt for the perfect beach spot to set up camp. After a few laps down a one way street with RV occupied beach sites as far as the eye could see, I settled on a vacant site one row up from the waterfront so I wouldnĄŻt waste any more time driving around. Once out of the car I could see the brilliant colours of the sky from behind a row of trees that stood between myself and the shoreline of Lake Superior. As perfect as my first patch of dirt was, I realized I had to make an important decision immediately. Do I put up the tent in what little daylight was left or do I grab the camera, an iced cold beverage and head to the beach instead? The camera and beverage won, so off I went to greet the waves, the sand, and the first sunset of my road trip with a coffee cup full of bubbles. Besides, I could always sleep in the car if I couldnĄŻt see well enough to put up the tent in the dark. It was the first week of September and it was still 23 degrees at almost 9:00pm, so at least I wouldnĄŻt freeze.

After taking in the magnificent view I walked the short distance back to my campsite and just stood there. I wasnĄŻt scared or overwhelmed, but I did feel odd. Odd in the sense that everything I needed was somewhere over there, in my car, in the dark, and all I had to do was figure out which bag held which valuable piece of equipment to satisfy my hunger and my growing exhaustion.

I managed to erect the tent by the light of my lantern and I settled on a dinner consisting of a bag of carrots and a few warm yogurts I retrieved from the bottom of my backpack. I had no idea which box had the soup and can opener or which bin held the peanut butter and bread, so I made a mental note to label everything the next time I embarked on such an adventure. I managed to gather enough deadwood to build a small campfire, wrote in my journal about the dayĄŻs events by flashlight, and decided to sleep in my clothes because I was far too tired to try and guess which of the 6 duffle bags contained my pyjamas.

But where was the nearest washroom? Not that I am above using the woods if need be, but surely there was a washroom close-by. I had forgotten to scout out the nearest facility from the excitement of the sunset followed by the necessity of building my shelter. You can imagine the thrill of discovering a tandem outhouse with a sink and cold running water just a short distance from my campsite. After a quick wash I crawled into my tent with flashlight in hand and car keys around my neck. (The car keys stayed around my neck whenever they werenĄŻt in the ignition in case I had to run for cover in the event a bear decided to invade my personal space). And so, I settled onto the thinner-than-I-thought sleeping pad, pulled the sleeping bag over my head and tucked the can of bear spray under my pillow. I was in bear country, after all.

I didnĄŻt sleep much. ItĄŻs amazing how the sound of a mouse chewing on a seed on the other side of the tent can seem daunting in the dark of night. I tossed and turned at every sound, every hoot, and every crack of a branch that was surely breaking under the weight of an approaching bear. After obsessing about bears and bugs and bumps in the night for a few hours, I was finally lulled to sleep by the sound of the not-so-distant waves lapping at the pebbled shore.

The glow of the next morningĄŻs sunrise gave me the excuse to say goodbye to the confines of the tent and hello to the beach for an early morning walk. Although I was tired, I was proud of myself for not sleeping in the car.?? My first camp breakfast consisting of a pot of freshly brewed coffee and a bowl of hot oatmeal, dried fruit and nuts was an accomplishment. It wasnĄŻt fancy but it was enough to satisfy my hunger from the night before and I had figured out how to work a propane cylinder with the camp burner stove. In between bites I began to take down the tent and repack the car until I caught this little guy helping himself every time I turned my back.

ItĄŻs amazing what a change of clothes and a bar of soap can do for you after a long night of little sleep. Although the smell of the outhouse permeated every fibre of my nostrils, I was happy to feel refreshed and ready to greet day two of my adventure. ?I was feeling quite accomplished until I saw a group of campers walk past my site with shower kits in hand and towels draped over their necks. When I asked if there were showers out there somewhere, they pointed and informed me there were really nice facilities just up the road a bit. You can imagine my sarcastic excitement. Excellent. Showers and flush toilets. Note to self: Check the park map before celebrating the discovery of an outhouse.

The highlight of Agawa Bay, besides the spectacular beach sunset, was a brief conversation I had with a woman whom I met while walking the beach at sunrise. She was a newly retired school teacher from England and had waited her whole life to visit Canada. After sharing my plan to drive to the furthest, most westerly shore in Canada, another 5000 kilometres give or take, she looked concerned and asked, Ą°Are you driving all alone, to the Pacific Ocean and back?Ąą When I confirmed that I was alone, and indeed I would be driving to the far side of Vancouver Island and back, she squealed with delight and said, Ą°How marvellous!Ąą, and then she hugged me.

ItĄŻs Not A Race

Summer is winding down and soon it will be time to pull those boats out of the water, which means many motorists will be driving home with trailer in tow. We consulted with Director of Muskoka Wharf Marine in Gravenhurst Greg De Marco who offers rental and timesharing packages for everything from lighter kayaks and Waverunners to heavier and more substantial wakeboard and pontoon boats. Regardless of whether youĄŻre an amateur or an expert, weĄŻve outlined some guidelines to help ensure your trip goes off without a hitch.

10) Pick the Right Tool for the Job

An inevitability during the summer months seems to be witnessing a vehicle that has no business towing a trailer, chugging along with its rear end sagging and safety chains scraping the road. Despite the size and stature of your vehicle, it is best to reference your ownerĄŻs manual for the vehicleĄŻs maximum towing capacity and gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This refers to the total amount of weight allowed for your entire setup, including vehicle, occupants, and cargo, in addition to the load on the trailer and the trailer itself. Renting a proper truck for towing purposes may seem costly, but so is replacing the transmission and shocks on your own vehicle.

9) Trailer Inspection

It never fails. Every summer you will inevitably pass numerous boat trailers and campers left stranded on the side of the road after suffering from seized wheel bearings or a flat tire. Recreational trailers are often treated poorly and left sitting idle to corrode for months on end, so ensuring that your load is road worthy is crucial before setting off. It may save your family vacation, and possibly your marriage.

trailer sitting on ground

8) Getting Hitched

Many tow vehicles will be equipped with factory-mounted hitches, but there are several options and variables based on your vehicle, trailer and load in general. A weight-carrying hitch is recommended for if the combined weight of the trailer and its cargo is up to 1,500 kgs. Weight-distributing hitches are recommended for heavier loads which will apply significant pressure onto the tongue and hitch ball which would throw off the balance of your towing setup and make handling difficult.

truck hitch

7) Let there be Lights

In addition to inspecting the overall road-worthiness of the trailer you will be towing, ensure that the brake lights and turn signals are working properly. HereĄŻs a helpful tip to help you save time; rather than walking back and forth from the vehicle to the back of the trailer to inspect turn signals, turn on the hazard lights to cover both sides on one trip.

6) Practice Makes Perfect

Towing a trailer, particularly backing up, are not necessarily intuitive tasks and take some time to become second nature. Before youĄŻre forced into a challenging situation with obstacles and an audience, why not visit an empty parking lot to practice the basics? Learn the characteristics of your setup and become accustomed to your turning radius. You can likely avoid many situations where backing up would be required, but it is still an essential skill if you plan on towing a trailer of any kind.

5) Secure your Load

It is always better to err on the side of caution when fastening your cargo into place to ensure that it doesnĄŻt throw off the balance of your vehicle, or heaven forbid, become a projectile. It would be very unfortunate to damage your costly investment for the nominal price of a ratchet strap. It is also important to check and then re-check once you have moved to ensure that the load has not shifted. Safety chains should be fastened in an ĄŽXĄŻ fashion in a manner that allows sufficient turning radius but arenĄŻt dragging on the ground.

ratchet strap

4) Mirror, Mirror

In most cases your rearview mirror will be obstructed by your trailer deeming it useless. You will also have a much longer wheelbase which will create significant blind spots that will need to be checked when backing up, merging or negotiating lane changes. Adjust your mirrors outward accordingly and explore the possibility of acquiring additional mirrors to increase your visibility.?

Tire size matters when towing

3) Use a Spotter

One of the most infuriating experiences of my life occurred when three different people were all attempting to throw their two cents in as to how I should navigate a large moving van down a narrow driveway in between two houses without hitting parked vehicles or pedestrians on a crowded street. Avoid confusion and potential jail time by appointing a spotter and have them stand in a location where they can be both seen and heard. Clear communication and proper directions will make backing up an infinitely easier task.

2) Weight Distribution

Keep in mind that it is always best to have heavier items down low so that they donĄŻt fall or throw off the balance of the trailer. Pack heavier items first and fasten them into place if possible to ensure they donĄŻt move around. Weight should be kept low and towards the front of the trailer as much as possible.

1) Take your time

ItĄŻs not a race. Towing a trailer involves carrying extra bulk and weight which means you should allow more time to accelerate, merge, brake and negotiate turns or park. Nothing good will come out of being in a rush so leave yourself extra time and space. Avoiding heavy braking or manoeuvres will save your brakes, tires and safety of your load.
