Exhaust System - Rattle/Buzz From Engine Compartment

Front Catalytic Converter Heat Shield Rattles or Buzzes



SYMPTOM



There is a rattle or buzz from the engine compartment that is most noticeable at idle or under light acceleration.



PROBABLE CAUSE



There is a radiator drain access hole in the front lower splash shield where water and road salt can enter and splash onto the warm-up TWC (front



warm-up three way catalytic converter) heat shield. The heat shield may rust or corrode to a point where the shield is loose enough to rattle or buzz.



CORRECTIVE ACTION



Replace the warm-up TWC heat shield, and install a splash shield cover.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



1. Remove the engine cover.



2. 2010-11 MDX only: Remove the No. 5 ignition coil and the heat insulator.



3. Disconnect the front (Bank 2) A/F Sensor 6P and secondary HO2S 4P connectors.

4. 2010-11 MDX only: Remove the EGR pipe upper mounting bolts.



5. Place a piece of cardboard or some other barrier between the front of the warm-up TWC and the radiator to protect the radiator from damage.



6. Raise the vehicle.



7. Remove the lower front splash shield.



8. 2010-11 MDX only: Remove the EGR pipe lower mounting nuts.



9. 2010-11 MDX only: Remove the EGR pipe.

10. Remove the two lower heat shield bolts.



11. Remove the two upper heat shield bolts, and remove the front half of the heat shield.



12. Remove the nuts that attach the A-pipe to the front and rear warm-up TWCs and allow the pipe to hang from its hanger.

13. Remove the four nuts that attach the front warm-up TWC to the cylinder head.



14. Carefully slide the warm-up TWC off the studs and remove the rear half of the heat shield.



15. Install the new front and rear halves of the heat shield onto the warm-up TWC and leave the bolts finger tight.



NOTE:



2010-11 MDX only: The two bolts with a large washer go in the top holes.



16. Install the front warm-up TWC onto the cylinder head using a new gasket and new nuts. Tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern in two or three



steps to 31 N.m (23 lb-ft).



17. Torque the heat shield bolts to 12 N.m (8.7 lb-ft).



18. Install the A-pipe to the warm-up TWCs using new gaskets and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 54 N.m (40 lb-ft).



19. 2010-11 MDX only: Install the EGR pipe using new gaskets. Torque the lower nuts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft), and leave the upper bolts finger tight.



20. Reinstall the lower front splash shield.

21. Install the splash shield cover into the splash shield below the radiator drain.



22. Lower the vehicle.



23. 2010-11 MDX only: Torque the EGR pipe upper mounting bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).



24. Remove the cardboard from between the front of the warm-up TWC and the radiator.



25. Reconnect the front (Bank 2) A/F sensor 6P and secondary HO2S 4P connectors.



26. 2010-11 MDX only: Reinstall the No. 5 ignition coil and heat insulator. Torque the ignition coil mounting nut and heat insulator mounting nuts



to 12 N.m (8.7 lb-ft).



27. Reinstall the engine cover.

Lighting - Revised Headlamp Igniter Harness Removal

Service Manual Update: Removing the Igniter Harness From the Headlight Housing



BACKGROUND



The headlight housing and the igniter harness are available as separate service parts. If you need to replace the headlight housing, follow the



REPAIR PROCEDURE to transfer the igniter harness to the new housing.



TOOL INFORMATION

REPAIR PROCEDURE



NOTE:



This procedure is in an outline form that you can also use as a checklist for the repair. If you need more details, bookmark the following



procedures in the 07-10 DX Service Manual, or view them online:



^ Bulb Replacement



^ Headlight Adjustment

1. Remove the screws, the clips, and the bolts securing the front bumper.



2. Pull on the front bumper at the wheel arch areas to release it from the hooks on the side spacers.



3. With the help of an assistant, pull both sides of the front bumper away from the side spacers, then pull the bumper out to release the hooks from



the corner upper beam.

4. With the help of an assistant, disconnect the fog light connectors, then remove the front bumper.



5. Disconnect the connectors from the headlight housing.



6. Remove the clips and the bolts, then remove the headlight.



7. Remove the corner upper beam from the headlight housing by removing the bolt.



8. Turn the cover 45 degrees counterclockwise to remove it from the headlight housing.

9. Turn the HID socket 45 degrees counterclockwise to remove it from the bulb, and disconnect the 1P connector.



10. Pull the retaining spring away from the bulb, then remove the bulb.



11. Remove the headlight, the front turn signal/front parking light, and the front side marker light from the headlight housing.



12. Remove the igniter harness from the 4P connector in the headlight housing:



NOTE:



To avoid problems during reassembly, note the wire locations in the connector before you remove the wire terminals.



^ On the wire side of the connector, look for a square hole above each wire terminal.



^ Push the special connector tool into the square hole lightly until you feel the resistance increase, then pull out the wire, the terminal, and



the special tool at the same time. Repeat for the other three wires.

13. Tightly wrap the wire terminals and the rubber terminal boot into a bundle with masking tape so it looks like a small egg.



14. Cutoff the ends of a coat hanger, and bend it into the shape below, or make an equivalent tool.



15. To remove the igniter from the headlight housing, push the wire bundle into the headlight housing while guiding it toward the front of the lens.



At the same time, gently pull on the harness from the other side. To avoid snagging the harness, use your finger or the tool you made in step 14,



to keep the harness toward the lens and away from the bracket inside the housing.



NOTE:



If the harness gets stuck, don't try to pull it out. Push the harness back in, then use your finger to push it toward the lens (away from the



bracket), and try again.



16. Tape a piece of heavy string or equivalent that is at about two feet long to the coat hanger.

17. On the new headlight housing, thread the coat hanger into the headlight housing, and move it around until you can grab it and pull it out of the



igniter opening.



18. Separate the string from the coat hanger, then remove the coat hanger.



19. Tape the string to the bundle on the igniter harness.



20. Pull on the string, and push the harness in to guide it through the headlight housing. If the harness gets caught, use your fingers to guide the



harness as high and as close to the lens as possible. Make sure the harness is routed over the bracket as shown.



21. Remove the tape from the wire terminals and the terminal boot, then insert the wire terminals into their correct cavities in the 4P connector



housing.



22. Reinstall the headlight, the front turn signal/front parking light, and the front side marker light into the headlight housing.



23. Reinstall the corner upper beam on the headlight housing.



24. Reinstall the headlight housing.



25. Reconnect all the connectors.



26. Reinstall the bumper:



^ Reconnect the fog light connectors.



^ Make sure the front bumper engages the hooks of both corner upper beams and the side spacers (on each side) securely.



^ Reinstall all the clips, the screws, and the bolts.



^ Replace any damaged clips.



27. Adjust the headlights.

Campaign - Roof Rack Side Rail Cracking

Product Update: Side Rails May Be Cracked On Silver Accessory Roof Rack



BACKGROUND



On some vehicles with a silver Acura Genuine Accessory roof rack, a manufacturing problem may have produced small cracks at the ends of the roof



rack side rails. This condition affects only the silver-colored roof racks. If the side rails are not replaced, the cracks could worsen.



CLIENT NOTIFICATION



All owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign. An example of the client notification is at the end of this



service bulletin.



Within the VIN range above, only about 400 vehicles with a silver accessory roof rack purchased before March 15, 2010, are affected by this



campaign. To verify vehicle eligibility, you must check at least one of these items:



^ The client has a notification letter, and the vehicle is equipped with a silver accessory roof rack.



^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry, and it has a silver accessory roof rack.



In addition to the bulleted items, check for a punch mark above the fifth character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location



means the vehicle has already been repaired.



Some of the vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be updated before they are sold or leased.



To see if a vehicle is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it, leasing it, or returning it to a service customer.



Should an unrepaired vehicle that was in inventory, or that came in for service after this service bulletin was issued, cause an injury or property



damage because of the campaigned item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and



indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims.

NOTE:



Most illustrations show the left side roof rack parts. The right side parts are the same, except where noted.



1. If equipped, remove the front and rear cross bars (eight Torx bolts). The cross bars will be reused; the Torx bolts will not.

2. Using the plastic trim tool, pry on the inside of the left center stay cover, toward the middle of the vehicle, to release the cover from the stay.



Remove the right center stay cover the same way. The center stay covers will not be reused.



3. Remove the four Torx bolts from the left and right center stays. The bolts will not be reused.



4. Using the plastic trim tool, pry up the front edge of the left front side rail cover to release the two clips, then pull the cover forward to release its



tab from the rail. Remove the right front side rail cover the same way. Both front side rail covers will be reused.

5. Using the plastic trim tool, pry up the rear edge of the left rear side rail cover to release the two clips, then pull the cover rearward to release its



tab from the rail. Remove the right rear side rail cover the same way. Both rear side rail covers will be reused.



6. Remove the eight Torx nuts from the left and right roof rack side rails, then lift both side rails off the roof. The Torx nuts will be reused; the side



rails will not.



7. Position the new left and right side rails over the stud bolts on the roof.

8. Secure the new side rails to the roof with the eight original Torx nuts. Torque the nuts to 15 N.m (11 lb-ft).



9. At the left and right center stays, install four new Torx bolts through the holes in the side rails. Torque the bolts to 12 N.m (9 lb-ft).



10. Attach new covers to the left and right center stays.



NOTE:



The covers are left and right specific.

11. Reinstall the left rear side rail cover by inserting its tab, and then pressing down to secure its two clips. Reinstall the right rear side rail cover the



same way.



12. Reinstall the left front side rail cover by inserting its tab, and then pressing down to secure its two clips. Reinstall the right front side rail cover



the same way.



13. If removed, reinstall the front (long) and the rear (short) cross bars using eight new Torx bolts. Torque the bolts to 15 N.m (11 lb-ft)



14. Center-punch a completion mark above the fifth character of the engine compartment VIN.

DVD and HDD Navigation System Information



DVD NAVIGATION TYPE IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL



For navigation Systems that use a navigation DVD, remove the navigation DVD and compare the label color and version to the following chart.



Clients may obtain navigation DVDs from a variety of sources (friends, internet auctions, etc.) outside the normal ordering process. If they install an



incorrect DVD, it can produce an error message, or cause the navigation system to malfunction. If the label is the wrong color or wrong version,



replace it with the correct navigation DVD before replacing the navigation unit.

For compass systems that use a compass CD, remove the CD and compare the label version to the following chart. Clients may try to install a



navigation DVD. If they install a navigation DVD or the wrong compass CD, it can produce an error message, or cause the compass system to



malfunction. If the label is the wrong color or wrong version, replace it with the correct compass CD before replacing the compass unit.



EARLIEST DVD VERSION APPLICATION FOR EACH MODEL



Each navigation system DVD contains a mapPOI (point of interest) database and the navigation system software for each model that it supports.



Inserting an older DVD (such as an earlier version than indicated in the table) can cause problems since it lacks the software to provide the specific



features needed for that model. Unfortunately, the navigation software may not detect or warn you that the version is outdated, and it may even



appear to operate normally.



NOTE



Replacing a DVD just because the version number is higher is not always justified. A higher software version does not necessarily mean it



contains newer software for your model. The DVD contains software for all models that use the same color DVD, and a revised number may or



may not have software fixes or upgrades for the model in question.

Typical warning symptoms that an outdated DVD is being used include



^ An Acura model navigation screen may display a Honda logo while booting up.



^ A newly introduced model feature (for example, XM radio or HFL) may not display properly, and Extension may display instead.



NOTE



Extension may be displayed when using Music Link, but should never be displayed when XM or USB is selected.



^ The current street being driven on may not appear properly at the bottom of the map screen display when the vehicle is driven on a main road.



NOTE



If necessary, compare the navigation system operation to a same model vehicle with a current DVD.



HOW TO IDENTIFY NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD VERSIONS



To determine the navigation or compass version on a particular model, start the engine, then locate the navigation or compass control unit (see the



appropriate service manual). Open the DVD door, and push the eject button to eject the disc. Hold the disc by the edges, and check for these items



^ The label color (see the chart on the previous pages for model application).



^ Read the DVD or CD version listed on the bottom of the label, and note it on the repair order. You will need this version number in these



instances



- To verify that the DVD or CD version is appropriate for the vehicle



- Any time you call Tech Line regarding a navigation or compass system issue



- To answer client inquiries concerning update or coverage issues



NOTE



Clients may obtain DVDs from sources outside the normal ordering process. If you determine this is the case, recommend that your client



purchase the appropriate DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center (see ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE DVD, or



COMPASS CD).



Software Patches



Occasionally, problems are discovered after a software version is released, either with the original software version that came with the vehicle, or a



yearly update DVD purchased by the client. Many software related problems can be repaired with software updates (patch CD).



Before assuming a navigation problem is hardware related, check the iN for software updates, and see if your client's problem is resolved with a



patch CD.



CHECKING A DISC (DVD OR CD) FOR DAMAGE



Check the underside of the disc for signs of mishandling. Deep scratches, swirl marks, or fingerprints can cause random lock-ups, reboots, and DVD



read or format errors.

NOTE



A damaged DVD or CD is not covered under warranty unless the disc is damaged by the navigation or compass unit. Damage by the navigation



or compass unit typically appears as circular scratches caused by something rubbing against the disc as it spins. The damage may appear as arcs



or complete circles on the disc reading surface. For more information, refer to Service Bulletin 08-035, DVD Head Error; or No Route



Displayed, and Navigation DVD is Scratched.



^ Verify that the underside of the disc is silver, and not a copy with a bluish color. Copies do not work properly and can cause other symptoms that



mimic hardware problems.



^ If the disc is dirty, go to DISC (DVD AND CD) HANDLING AND CLEANING.



^ If the DVD is defective, or has any of the issues mentioned above that are not covered by a service bulletin, return the vehicle to your client and



recommend that they order the proper DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center (see ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE



DVD, OR COMPASS CD).



NOTE



If the navigation or compass unit is found to be defective (through the appropriate service manual troubleshooting procedures) and the disc will



not eject, order a replacement control unit, and also order a DVD or CD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. (New control units do not come



with a navigation DVD or compass CD.)



ORDERING A REPLACEMENT DVD, UPDATE DVD, OR COMPASS CD



To order a navigation DVD, you can call the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. The Fulfillment Center knows the correct color DVD application for



each vehicle and can provide the latest version. To order online, go to the website and use the dropdown menu under Find Updates. The client's



navigation manual provides additional ordering and installation information. This information is located in the Client Assistance section.



To order a compass CD, you cannot use the online website. Call the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center, select option 3 for dealerships, then select option



2 for map patches and specify you are ordering a compass CD for the RL.



NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD STOCKING CONCERNS



Never stock navigation system DVDs, because software versions are constantly updated. Some dealerships also remove the DVDs from new or used



vehicles, store them in a common, locked location, then reinstall them when the vehicle is sold. This is a mistake because the various navigation



systems are version sensitive (meaning that even if the correct color DVD is used, an older version may not work).



The same issues apply to compass CDs, as on the surface, they appear similar to navigation DVDs. Since compass-equipped vehicles appear similar



to navigation-equipped vehicles, this increases the chances of the wrong disc being inserted.



Stocking navigation DVDs or compass CDs or storing navigation DVDs and compass CDs in a common location can result in any of these



problems



^ Incorrectly colored DVDs or compass CDs being put into navigation vehicles. This causes the system to display error messages, or it causes



system malfunctions that mimic a hardware problem. This results in the client driving away with a malfunctioning navigation system.



^ The DVD version is out-of-date or incompatible with a particular model. This inconveniences your client by delaying the repair, or by causing



additional (and unnecessary) returns to your dealership.



^ A navigation DVD being put into a compass vehicle causes the system to display DISC ERROR messages.



^ The client experiences software bugs or other issues that have already been resolved in later versions currently available at the fulfillment center.



These ordering procedures are recommended



^ Always order navigation DVDs on an as-needed basis. During a typical model year, each color DVD may undergo a half-dozen software only

version upgrades to fix minor issues on some or all models the DVD supports. This is normal. Usually, only the letter at the end of the version



number changes, while the database (maps and POIs) remain unchanged through the year.



^ Never promise your clients future free updates. There are no free programs for updating navigation DVDs. Update DVDs are generally available



for purchase each fall. The online DVD order site provides information when an update for a particular color DVD is available.



^ Compass CDs are seldom updated. Order a compass CD only if it is damaged and needs replacement.



NOTE



^ Refer to the version chart in this service bulletin when ordering any navigation system DVD.



^ Damaged discs are not warrantable unless they are damaged by the navigation unit.



DISC (DVD AND CD) HANDLING AND CLEANING



To avoid damaging or leaving fingerprints on the disc, always handle it by the edges and place it in a jewel case whenever it is outside the control



unit. Deep scratches or fingerprints on the back of the disc can cause intermittent rebooting or other system errors.



Smudges and fingerprints can be carefully removed using a mild cleaner and soft cloth designed to clean eyeglasses. To clean a disc, first apply the



cleaning solution to the disc, and using a clean soft cloth, very gently wipe across the disc from the center to the outside edge, never in a circular



motion.



Do not place stabilizer rings or labels on the disc.



INSTALLING A NAVIGATION DVD OR COMPASS CD



NOTE



For compass systems, the procedure is the same except there is no disclaimer screen, and you do not need to map-match the vehicle.



1. Park the vehicle outside, and start the engine.



2. Eject the old DVD.



3. Install the new navigation DVD. Be sure to close the door on the navigation unit.



4. Select OK on the disclaimer screen, then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). Wait 1 minute, then restart the engine.



5. Select OK on the disclaimer screen.



6. Drive the vehicle on a mapped road until the road name appears at the bottom of the map screen. The system is now map-matched.



PRECAUTION ON CLIENT SNEAK PREVIEWS OF A NEWER NAVIGATION DVD VERSION



Your client might request a look (or sneak preview) at features in the latest navigation software. You should never preview a navigation DVD in a

client's vehicle. Inserting a new DVD installs the latest software from the DVD into the memory of the client's navigation system. When the original



DVD is reinstalled, the newer software remains in memory and is often incompatible with the client's original DVD Map and P01 database.



If your client wishes to see the latest navigation coverage or software features, demonstrate it on an in-stock vehicle that already has the latest DVD



version.



If a newer version is loaded accidentally, either by the dealer or the client, one possible remedy is to enter the navigation diagnostic mode's Version



screen and do a forced download. Refer to the iN for applicable patches that may need reinstalling.



If a forced download does not reinstall the original software, the navigation unit may need to be replaced. This is not covered under warranty.



NOTE



A forced download is not possible when the client upgrades their 2005 white-labeled DVD version 4.13 with an '06 or later DVD version 4.31 or



greater. Either a new version DVD must be purchased, or the navigation unit must be replaced.



PITFALLS WHEN INTERCHANGING NAVIGATION DVDPARTS DURING DIAGNOSIS



When troubleshooting navigation system problems, ensure that the known-good vehicle is the same software version year and model as the vehicle



being serviced. Mixing incompatible navigation DVDs or other system components can delay the troubleshooting process by causing side effects



unrelated to the original problem. See the table under DVD NAVIGATION TYPE IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL.



REPLACING THE NAVIGATION UNIT AND TRANSFERRING THE NAVIGATION DVD



If your diagnosis determines the client's navigation unit is faulty, you will need to order a remanufactured replacement navigation unit (in warranty),



or send it out for repair (out of warranty). Refer to Service Bulletin 06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange, and Audio and



DVD Player Out-of-Warranty Repair). The order procedure on the iN is designed to minimize unnecessary replacement of parts due to client



settings, unfamiliarity with system operation, or softwaredatabase issues that cannot be resolved by hardware replacement. The Navigation System



Worksheet asks the following navigation information



^ The client's DVD color and version number on the label, and condition of the DVD (inspection for scratches).



^ The client's complaint, symptom, and other details to allow duplication of the issue by the factory.



^ The results of the diagnostic procedure from the service manual.



This information helps the Remanufacture Center and the factory to understand the problem and properly repair the core.



NOTE



The parts are not available through the Remanufactured Parts Center



Replacement navigation units do not come with a DVD because the parts center has no way of knowing the client's current DVD version. When the

1. Save the client's data (if equipped) using the Save Users Memory procedure



^ Refer to the applicable service manual, or



^ Online, enter keywords NAVI DIAG, select Navigation System Diagnostic Mode from the list, and look for Save Users Memory.



2. With the engine running, open the navigation unit door, and eject the DVD from the original unit. To avoid scratching or damaging the DVD,



temporarily place the DVD in a jewel case.



NOTE



If the DVD will not eject, write that information clearly on the core return form, and order a DVD from the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center.



3. Install a new navigation unit



^ Refer to the navigation section in the applicable service manual, or



^ Online, enter keywords NAVI REMOVAL, and select Navigation Unit RemovalInstallation from the list.



4. Reinstall the client's original DVD, verifying that the DVD is free of deep scratches or smudges.



5. Check online for any service bulletins prescribing patches that should be applied to the replacement navigation unit.

HDD VERSION IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL



For navigation Systems that use the first-generation HDDflash memory card (1996-99 3.5RL, 1999 3.21L), transfer the HDD or flash memory card



to the replacement navigation unit



^ 1996-99 3.5RL models If you are replacing the navigation unit, make sure you transfer the HDD or the flash memory card from the original unit



to the replacement unit.



^ 1999 3.2TL models The original HDD navigation unit is no longer available. You can either try to send it to Alpine for repair (see Service



Bulletin 06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange and Out-of-Warranty Repair), or replace it with the 2000 IL DVD



navigation unit. Make sure you also order a black label DVD since the DVD does not come with the new navigation unit.



For navigation systems that use an HDD, check the software version and compare the version to the chart.

^ Make sure you are on the map screen, then press INFO.



^ Push the interface dial to the right to select OTHER.

Software Patches



Occasionally, problems are discovered after a software version is released, either with the original software version that came with the vehicle, or a



map update purchased by the client. Many software related problems can be repaired with software updates (patch CD).



Before assuming a navigation problem is hardware related, check the iN for software updates, and see if your client's problem is resolved with a



patch CD.



REPLACING THE NAVIGATION CONTROL UNIT OR THE NAVIGATION HDD



First Generation HDD



If your diagnosis determines the client's navigation unit is faulty, you will need to order a new part or send it out for repair. Refer to Service Bulletin



06-001, Audio, Navigation, and RES Unit In-Warranty Exchange and Out-of-Warranty Repair). The order procedure on the iN is designed to



minimize unnecessary replacement of parts due to client settings, unfamiliarity with system operation, or softwaredatabase issues that cannot be



resolved by hardware replacement. The Navigation System Worksheet asks the following navigation information



^ The client's complaint, symptom, and other details to allow duplication of the issue by the factory.



^ The results of the diagnostic procedure from the service manual.



This information helps the factory to understand the problem and properly repair the core.



NOTE



The following parts are not available through the Remanufactured Parts Center



1. Remove the original navigation unit. Either order a new navigation unit or send the unit out for repair. Refer to SB 06-001 for more information



^ Refer to the applicable service manual, or



^ Online, enter keywords NAVI DIAG, select



Navigation System Diagnostic Mode from the list, and look for Save Users Memory.



2. Install a new navigation unit



^ Refer to the navigation section in the applicable service manual, or



^ Online, enter keywords NAVI REMOVAL, and select Navigation Unit RemovalInstallation from the list.



3. Check online for any service bulletins prescribing patches that should be applied to the replacement navigation unit.



4. Park the vehicle outside, and do the system initialization. Online, look up the navigation system TQI service bulletin that applies to the client's



vehicle. This assures that all components connected to, or controlled by, the navigation unit are working properly. The TQI procedure includes a



short test to ensure that the navigation unit has synchronized its maps with the current location obtained during the GPS initialization



(map-matching).



Second Generation HDD

The audio-navigation unit and HDD are only available as separate parts. There is a built in anti-theft protection referred to as mating to limit



replacing an HDD or audio-navigation unit. Refer to Audio- Navigation Unit and HDD Service Precautions in General Troubleshooting of the



applicable service manual for more information.



If you substitute an audio-navigation unit for troubleshooting, you must substitute a combined audio-navigation unit and HDD. Do not substitute the



audio-navigation unit or HDD separately.



If your diagnosis determines that the audio-navigation unit is at fault, the replacement unit does not come with an HDD. Transfer the original HDD



to the new audio- navigation unit. All the client's settings, music, and personal information are transferred with the HDD.



NOTE



If the HDD is not transferred to the replacement audio-navigation unit, an HDD Access Error appears on the display.



ORDERING A REPLACEMENT HDD



If you need to replace the HDD, it is available through the parts ordering system as a restricted part. You will need the vehicle VIN to complete the



order. The VIN allows the supplier to confirm the current software version being used by the client. When the HDD arrives at the dealership, install



the HDD in the audio- navigation unit, then check any official Honda service website for any patches or updates related to the navigation system.



NOTE



If the HDD is not transferred to the replacement audio-navigation unit, an HDD Access Error appears on the display.



ORDERING AN ANNUAL HDD UPDATE



To order an update disc for the HDD system, contact the Acura Disc Fulfillment Center. You can also order the update disc online. Go to the website



and select the model and year to find updates. The client's navigation system manual provides additional ordering and installation information. This



information is located in the Client Assistance section.



Follow the instructions included with the update disc on how to load the update information into the navigation system.



ENTERING THE ANTI-THEFT CODE ON AN HDD UNIT



Any time power is disconnected from the navigation unit, the 5-digit anti-theft code must be entered on the navigation system display. This 5-digit



code can be found on a small code card or label in the glove box. Enter the 5-digit code, then select Done.



If the code card is lost or unavailable, you can get the code from the iN (Interactive Network) using the navigation system serial number. The system



serial number can easily be obtained without removing the navigation unit. To get the serial number and the code, do this



^ Press and hold the MENU, MAPGUIDE, and CANCEL buttons at the same time.



^ At the Select Diagnosis Items screen, select Detail Information & Settings, select Unit Check, then ECU INFO. The system runs a brief



diagnostic, then the navigation unit serial number is displayed at the bottom of the screen.



^ Use the navigation Anti-theft code inquiry option on the iN to look up the 5-digit navigation anti-theft code. The iN may display more than one



code for a given serial number. This is because serial numbers are not unique. You may have to try more than one 5-digit code if listed.



^ If no code is shown, or the code(s) given do not work, call the American Honda Warranty department. Do not call Tech Line.



When you replace a navigation unit, be sure to remove the old code card, and give the client the new anti-theft security code card.



ANSWERING CLIENT QUESTIONS ABOUT NAVIGATION SYSTEM COVERAGE



Some clients may ask questions regarding a city, address, or POI (point of interest) covered by the navigation system. It is better to verify a coverage



question on an actual vehicle than to disappoint your client by promising coverage that may be incomplete or missing in their area. The following



suggestions can be used to answer coverage inquiries from your client.



^ How do I find the local address of a business that is part of a national chain (for example, Starbucks)



There are three ways to find the local address to businesses



- If you know the phone number of the business, select Phone Number and enter the 10-digit phone number (area code plus seven-digit



number).



- Select Name and enter Starbucks. For more common business names, like McDonald's, you may have to search through a list that includes



other businesses like McDonald's Welding, McDonald's Automotive, etc.



- With DVD Select Category, then Restaurant. Enter the keyword Star. The resulting list includes all restaurants that have the letters Star



anywhere in the name.

- With HDD Select Place Category, then Restaurant. Under Sub category, select All Types, then Place Name. Enter keyword Star. The



resulting list includes all restaurants that have the letters Star anywhere in the name.



^ Is my address covered by the navigation system



Using a current production vehicle (of the same model), try entering the client's address (street first) to see if their area is covered. Always enter



the street first, because sometimes their city may be included in a neighboring township, or under some larger metropolitan city name. If the



address is shown in a later year vehicle but not your client's vehicle, recommend that your client purchase an update.



If the client's address is not in the current database, you can store the client's address as a map input. Refer to ViewingSaving the current



location in the navigation manual.



^ Is my city covered by the navigation system



For general questions about whether a city is covered, view the map coverage link on the DVD order site. On the site, you enter a year and



model, and then click on the Coverage link. You then select a state or province, and the cities are listed. Of course, this does not guarantee that



the client's road or address is in the system. Verifying on an actual production vehicle is always the best guarantee that your information is



accurate.



^ The gas station on my corner is now a restaurant. Why is it still incorrect in the navigation system



For POI-related client questions, explain that businesses are constantly moving, and there can be a considerable lag in updating the millions of



POIs in the system. The database is updated annually, and the best way to verify whether the P01 is accurate is to verify the inquiry on a current



production vehicle.



^ How do I update my Gracenote software



While this is not a navigation system software, clients may ask questions about it. Refer to the audio section of the applicable owner's manual.

2. Call XM Satellite Radio at 800-852-9696 to verify the client's account status and the current services being provided. For example, is the client



paying for XM, but not traffic or weather?

1. Print out the AcuraLink Control Unit Core Return Form from an iN workstation.

Service Technician:



1. If, after reviewing all publications available through the iN and talking directly to XM support you cannot repair the problem, order a



remanufactured AcuraLink control unit through the Open Ordering System.



2. You will receive a remanufactured AcuraLink control unit, packed in a reusable shipping box. Save this box and the packing materials. You must



return the failed AcuraLink control unit core in this box. Otherwise, your dealership risks being billed a $1,500.00 core loss charge and the core



will be sent back to your dealership.



3. Remove and replace the failed AcuraLink control unit:



^ Refer to the Audio, Navigation, and Telematics section of the appropriate service manual, or



^ From the iN main menu:



- Click on SERVICE.



- Click on ISIS (Service Publications).



- Click on SEARCH BY VEHICLE.



- Enter the model and the model year.



- Online, enter keywords ACURALINK REMOVAL, and select AcuraLink Control Unit (XM Receiver) Removal/Installation from the



list.



NOTE:



Call XM Satellite Radio at 800-852-9696 to update the client's account with the new XM/HIP serial number. Also, call Acura Client

4. Make sure the failed AcuraLink control unit core is not disassembled. If the core is disassembled, your dealership will be debited a $1,500 core



loss charge.



5. Put the failed AcuraLink control unit core in the same box that the remanufactured unit came in.

6. Place the printed copy of the completed AcuraLink Control Unit Core Return Form and the paid warranty claim form into the core return box



with the failed AcuraLink control unit core.



7. Ship the failed AcuraLink control unit core to the appropriate location by using the prepaid shipping label that came with the remanufactured



AcuraLink control unit. If you need additional prepaid shipping labels, contact Remanufactured Parts Operations.



^ Complete the shipping label with your dealer information.



^ Pack one control unit per box, and use a separate shipping label for each one.



^ On the line requesting Your Internal Reference Information, enter YOUR DEALER NUMBER and the WARRANTY CLAIM NUMBER.



NOTE:



If the failed AcuraLink control unit core is not received at the specified address within 30 days from the warranty claim paid date, your



warranty claim will be debited, and your dealership will be issued a core loss fee of $1,500.



8. On the repair order, write down the warranty claim number, the original part number, the serial numbers from both the faulty and remanufactured



units, and the return tracking number.



9. Ship the faulty unit in the same box the remanufactured unit came in. Make sure you include this required paperwork:



^ A copy of the AcuraLink Control Unit Core Return Form.



^ A copy of the paid warranty claim.

If you return a failed AcuraLink control unit core without the proper forms, your warranty claim will be debited, and the core will be sent

To work properly, the occupant position detection system (OPDS) unit must be initialized whenever you replace the SRS unit, the OPDS unit, or the

1. Adjust the front passenger's seat-back to a normal upright position, and remove anything that is on or near the seat.



2. Start the engine, and turn on the A/C. Close the doors and windows, and run the A/C in Recirculation mode for 30 minutes. (This will dry out



any moisture that may be in the front passengers seat.)



3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).



4. Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) with the latest software version to the 16P data link connector (DLC).



5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and then turn on the HDS.



6. At the screen prompts, enter the VIN and the odometer reading, and then verify the correct date and time.



7. From the System Selection Menu screen, select SRS.



8. From the Mode Menu screen, select Miscellaneous Test.



9. From the Miscellaneous Test Menu screen, select OPDS Initialization.



10. Follow the remaining screen prompts to complete the OPDS initialization process. If the initialization fails, try initializing the OPDS unit using



the Manual Mode.



INITIALIZING THE OPDS UNIT: MANUAL MODE



1. Adjust the front passenger's seat-back to a normal upright position, and remove anything that is on or near the seat.



2. Start the engine, and turn on the A/C. Close the doors and windows, and run the A/C in Recirculation mode for 30 minutes. (This will dry out

3.5RL Service Manual for details. (In ISIS, use the keyword OPDS, and select Initializing the OPDS from the list.) Go to step 7.



6. From the Select Mode screen, select SCS, and follow the screen prompts.

7. Plug the SCS service connector into the 2P memory erase signal (MES) connector, as shown.

8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).



9. Watch the SRS indicator. (It comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.) Unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector



within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.



10. When the SRS indicator comes on again, plug the SCS service connector into the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds after the indicator comes



on



11. When the SRS indicator goes off, unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds.



12. Watch the SRS indicator:

^ If the indicator blinks twice and then goes off, the OPDS unit is initialized. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and disconnect the HDS



(all models except 3.5RL) or unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P service check connector (3.5RL only). Return the vehicle to



your customer.



^ If the indicator blinks twice and then stays on, the OPDS unit is initialized, but the SRS DTCs need to be cleared. Go to step 13.



^ If the indicator stays on without first blinking, the OPDS unit is not initialized. Repeat steps 3thru 10.



13. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), Disconnect the HDS (all models except 3.5RL) or unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P service



check connector (3.5RL only).



14. Plug the SCS service connector into the 2P MES connector. Do not use a jumper wire.



15. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).



16. Watch the SRS indicator. (It comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.) Unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector



within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.

20. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). (The SRS is OK if the SRS indicator comes on for 6 seconds and then goes off.) If the DTC clearing fails,



repeat the process two more times. If the DTC clearing fails again, check for set SRS DTCs, and troubleshoot in accordance with the



appropriate service manual.

This service bulletin has been revised extensively. American Honda recommends that you review the entire bulletin.



INTRODUCTION



The software for the GR8 Battery Diagnostic Station is updated periodically to fix software bugs and enhance the tool's functionality. You can now



use the Midtronics GR8 update wizard to download software and firmware to your GR8 using a PC and the Internet. It is extremely important to use



the latest GR8 software to ensure that the current battery testing and diagnostic procedures are used.



Acura introduced a new policy to ensure that GR8 testers are updated promptly. The GR8 software must now be updated within 3 days of receiving



notification from an iN message or other Acura communication. If an out-of-date version is used, any battery or alternator replacements may not be



covered under warranty.

1. Make sure the GR8 is off and the SD card is removed.

7. A File Download - Security Warning screen appears. Select Run.



8. A file will be downloaded to your computer. After it is finished, an Internet Explorer - Security Warning screen appears. Select Run.

9. The Midtronics Update Wizard appears. Refer to SOFTWARE INFORMATION to find the current software version.



10. Turn on the GR8, and follow the Update Wizard on-screen instructions.



11. When the update is complete, the Update Results screen appears, indicating the update was successful. Click Finish to close the Update Wizard.



12. Turn the GR8 off for 10 seconds. Reinstall the SD card, then turn the GR8 on, and confirm that the software is updated to the software version



listed under SOFTWARE VERSION.



13. If an error message appears anytime during the update, follow the on-screen instructions, and try updating the GR8 again. If the error message



does not go away, or if you have any other problems updating the GR8, call Midtronics.



14. If you have more than one GR8, repeat the update procedure for each unit.



15. Once all GR8s are updated, store the USB-to-mini-USB cable in a safe location for future updates.

Whiny A/T? Consider This Before Ordering a Reman



Got a vehicle in your shop for a whiny A/T? Before you go off and order a reman unit, you need to consider a few things first. Our reman center has



found that 30 to 40 percent of the failed A/Ts returned for noise problems turned out being NTF after inspection.



To avoid unnecessary A/T replacement, here are some general front-wheel-drive facts you need to think about as you troubleshoot:



^ Front-wheel-drive vehicles have a transaxle instead of a conventional A/T with a rear differential. The transaxle combines A/T and differential



gears, shafts, and bearings into a compact package that's mounted right next to the passenger compartment. Because the transaxle is so close to



the passenger compartment, the noise from the transaxle is more evident than the noise from a conventional A/T with a rear differential.

^ Front-wheel-drive vehicles can transmit wheel bearing, tire, and transaxle noises into the passenger compartment more readily than vehicles with



rear wheel drive. Test-drive both your client's vehicle and an identical known good vehicle for comparison. Some noises can take up to 20 miles

1. Make sure the ED-18 is off, then detach the printer by using the hex wrench to remove the two screws at the bottom of the printer. Pull the



printer straight out from the ED-18 to avoid damaging the connector terminals.



2. Connect the R8232 interface cable to the ED-18



where the printer was connected, then connect the



interface cable to your PC.



NOTE:



If your computer doesn't have an R8232 serial port, use the R8232 to USB adapter.



3. Connect the ED-18 battery clamps to a fully charged 12-volt battery.



4. Online, go to www.midtronics.com/home/clientlogin/clientlogin.aspx:



5. Enter your username and password, then click the Login button.

Expand Ports, and check the communications port number. The communications port number should match the COMM number in the Midtronics



update utility. If the numbers do not match, click on the arrows next to the COMM windows in the Midtronics update utility, and change the number



to match the computer system's port number.

Make sure this communications port number matches the COMM number on the update. If it does not, change the number on the update.



13. Click on Start to begin the update which takes about a minute. A progress bar appears. Wait until you get a message indicating the update was



successful.



NOTE:



^ If the clamps come off the battery, or the R8232 interface cable comes loose, turn the ED-18 off, then back on. When the logon screen



appears on the ED-18, click on Start to restart the update.



^ If the error message Flash not erased appears, replace the AA batteries in the ED-18, and try the update again.



14. Click on OK on the ED-18 update.



15. Click on Quit on the ED-18 update. Make sure the message UPDATE COMPLETE appears on the ED-18 tester.



16. Turn the ED-18 tester off, then back on.



17. Confirm the software on the ED-18 tester is updated to the software version listed under SOFTWARE VERSION.



NOTE:



If you have any problems updating the ED-18, call Midtronics at 866-592-8054.



18. Reinstall the printer.



19. If you have more than one ED-18, repeat the update procedure for each unit.

1. Move the driver's seat all the way forward, and work from the rear seat.



2. Open the center console armrest.



3. Working from the back to the front, remove the latch hole trim by inserting the trim tool under it, and twisting up on it. Be careful not to scratch



the center console or the latch hole trim.

4. Cut six 5 mm x 10 mm pieces of wool felt.



5. Apply three pieces of wool felt, one on top of the other, above the rear side clip hole. Apply the remaining three pieces of wool felt, one on top



of the other, below the rear side clip hole.



6. Reinstall the latch trim.



7. Remove the three screws from the armrest base.



8. Pull out the armrest base to detach the clips.



9. Remove the two screws that removes the armrest from the armrest hinge.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



1. Replace the navigation unit or compass unit:



^ Refer to the Navigation section of the appropriate service manual, or



^ Online, under Search by Vehicle, enter keywords NAVI REMOVE and select Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) from



the list.

2. Remove the disc. Look at the disc label to identify the version (VER). To order the replacement disc, call, select option 3 for dealerships, then



select option 2 for map patches, and specify that you are replacing a disc for circular scratches. Have the following information ready, and give it



to the ordering clerk to ensure you get the correct disc:



^ The order is for service bulletin 08-035.



^ The VIN.



^ The disc version on the label.



NOTE:



^ For 2007 DVDs with version 4.55 or 4.56, request a replacement DVD with version 4.56A.

SYMPTOM



The VSA system indicator comes on with DTC 118



(clutch pedal position switch B), and the MID indicates



CHECK HILL START ASSIST SYSTEM.



PROBABLE CAUSE



The clutch pedal was repeatedly not released fully during shifting, causing the VSA control unit to incorrectly judge a clutch solenoid malfunction.



CORRECTIVE ACTION



Update the VSA control unit software with the HDS, then do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization.

REPAIR PROCEDURE



1. Update the VSA control unit software with the HDS. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-026, Updating Control Units/Modules.

NOTE:



If an error code SD or 50 occurs after re-flash process is completed, follow the instructions of the HDS. Turn the ignition switch OFF then



ON (II), and retry programming. If the update was successfully completed, the HDS will state "this vehicle does not need an update at this



time".



2. Do the VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization with the HDS, and follow the screen prompts.
