SUBJECT



Corrosion on Door Seal Flange



MODEL



R50, R52, R53 (Cooper, Cooper Convertible, Cooper S)



SITUATION



The customer may complain that they have noticed areas of corrosion under the door seal, on the horizontal door flange.



CAUSE



Water seeping under the door seal and collecting in this area may lead to corrosion in certain heat and humidity conditions.



CORRECTION



On a customer complaint basis, the recommended paint and body repair should be performed.



PROCEDURE



1. Verify the customers complaint by removing the lower part of the door seal (1) and inspecting the horizontal portion of the flange for



corrosion.



2. [NEW] Take clear digital photos of all affected areas. These photos must be retained for warranty and records purposes.



[NEW]NOTE:



The date stamp feature of the camera should be turned ON, so this date appears on the photo.



3. Heavy corrosion will require sanding and painting.



The following paint and body repair should be performed to the horizontal surface of the affected flange [s] only.



a. Prepare the surface by cleaning with a solvent based cleaner.



b. Paper the area surrounding the work area.



c. Use an 80 grit Roloc Bristle Disk on the affected area.

d. Sand the affected area with P180 grit paper followed by P220 and then P320 grit paper.



e. Blow and tack off the area to be sprayed.



f. Use etch primer or epoxy primer followed by primer surfacer after allowing the correct flash time.



g. Lamp (IRT) the area for 5 10 minutes at 80锟斤拷 C.



h. Sand and feather the edge primer surfacer with wet P800 grit sand paper



i. Blow and tack off the affected area.



j. Apply BMW specified base coat.



k. Apply BMW specified clear coat.



l. Allow a flash time of 5 10 minutes



m. Lamp (IRT) the affected area for 25 30 minutes at 60锟斤拷 C.



n. Re-install the door seal
