Finish Peels Off the Parking Brake Lever



SYMPTOM



The finish on the parking brake lever is peeling off.



PROBABLE CAUSE



The chemicals in some sunscreens and lotions react negatively with the finish on the parking brake lever, causing the finish to peel off.



CORRECTIVE ACTION



Replace the parking brake lever.

1. Fully release the parking brake.



2. Remove the center console rear trim.



3. Remove the center console panel.



4. Remove the passenger's dashboard trim.



5. Remove the driver's and the passengers dashboard center trim.



6. Remove the center console.

7. Remove the parking brake lever



^ Disconnect the connector from the parking brake switch.



^ Remove the parking brake lever mount bolts.



^ Disconnect the parking brake cables from the equalizer, then remove the parking brake lever.



^ Remove the parking brake switch (one screw).



8. Install the parking brake switch on a new parking brake lever, then install the new lever in the reverse order of removal. Hand-tighten the parking



brake adjusting nut.



NOTE



Do not scratch the coating on the link cable while handling and installing the new parking brake lever.



9. Fully release the parking brake, then raise the vehicle on a lift.



10. Make sure the lever on the rear brake caliper is contacting the arm. The lever contacts the arm when the parking brake adjusting nut is loose.



11. Lower the vehicle enough to sit in the driver's seat, then pull the parking brake lever one click.

12. Tighten the parking brake adjusting nut until the parking brake drags slightly when you turn the rear wheels.



13. Fully release the parking brake lever, then check that the parking brake does not drag when you turn the rear wheels. Readjust if needed.



14. Pull the parking brake lever with 196 N (44 lb) of force to fully apply the parking brake. Make sure the parking brake lever is within the



specified number of clicks (six to eight). Readjust if needed.



15. Reinstall the center console, and make sure the connectors are securely connected. Torque the center console bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).



16. Replace any damaged clips on the driver's and the passenger's dashboard center trim, then reinstall the trims.



17. Replace any damaged clips on the passenger's dashboard trim, then reinstall the trim.



18. Replace any damaged clips on the center console panel, then reinstall the panel. Make sure the connectors are securely connected.



19. Replace any damaged clips on the center console rear trim, then reinstall the trim.
