SUBJECT

Rattling Noises from the Shift Cable Area

MODEL

Cooper R50 with the W10 engine and the 5-speed transmission produced from January through July 2003.

SITUATION

Certain Coopers manufactured within the listed dates may have shift cables that were not properly secured. There is insufficient clearance between

the heat shield and the shift cables.

CORRECTION

Secure the shift cables with a clamp and cable tie and ensure there is a sufficient gap between the heat shield and the cables.

PROCEDURE

Loosen screws (1). Remove the heat protection shield (2) for shift cables.

Position the clamp (1) approximately 10 cm (A) from the shift cable retainers (2) and in the direction of the engine compartment. Clip cables into

clamp.

Place the tie wrap (2) around both shift cables (1) and in the position as shown, between the fixed cable retainers (3).

In area 1, ensure there is a gap of approximately 10 mm between the shift cables (2) and heat shield (3). Reshape the heat shield if necessary.
